SUMMARY
The Arts and Crafts Specialist, under the general supervision of the Playground Director and/or Playground Supervisor, plans and supervises the arts and crafts activities for the City of Groton Parks and Recreation Summer Playground program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
- Supervises Arts and Crafts Assistants.
- Develops new and original ideas for arts and crafts activities.
- Plans arts and crafts projects and gathers the materials to be used in the projects.
- Teaches basic fundamentals and develops new techniques for relating concepts to participants.
- Maintains an accurate record of materials inventory.
- Engages in group activities when needed, i.e., field trips, beach activities, etc.
- Promotes a professional and courteous image of the City of Groton.
- Follows all safety rules and maintains a safe environment for program participants.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to work with children of all ages in craft activities.
- Provides instruction to participants concerning arts and crafts.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, program participants and members of the general public.
- Knowledgeable in the techniques pertaining to arts and crafts and community recreation.
- Ability to develop and maintain a safe and cooperative environment for program participants.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Must be 18 years of age at start of program.
- High school graduate or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
- A minimum of two (2) years of education in arts and crafts, recreation, physical education or other related field or two (2) years experience teaching arts and crafts.
- Must have experience as an instructor in arts and crafts, or in a leadership role in the area of arts and crafts.
- Extensive participation in arts and crafts may be substituted for educational requirements.
CERTIFICATIONS
Must possess and maintain as a condition of employment, proof of successful completion of Adult/Child/Infant Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and basic first aid certification.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this position, the individual is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, uses hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms and stoop. The individual may occasionally be required to lift up to twenty (20) pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is performed in a building or in a pavilion. The employee may be exposed to the elements of weather.
