Overview
Nuclear Test Engineering (D275) is responsible for the safe conduct of reactor plant testing onboard all submarine classes. This testing includes mechanical, electrical and chemistry related reactor plant systems.
Candidates must complete a comprehensive Qualification Program for Shift Test Engineer (STE) on the S9G reactor plant.
This involves passing:
- Extensive classroom training and written examinations;
- Completing shipboard training;
- Two Day NAVSEA certified Written examination;
- EB administered oral board examination.
Approximate time for training before qualification as STE is 24 months after obtaining security clearance. After qualification the STE directs reactor plant testing for their assigned shift (position does require various shift work, including overtime, weekends and the possibility of holidays). This includes direction of Ships Force, Rad Con, Trades, Inspection, and Test Technician personnel.
The qualified STE ensures testing and operations involving the reactor plant are performed safely and in accordance with NAVSEA , Manual for the Control of Testing and Plant Conditions.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical and Nuclear Engineering preferred
- 5-14 years of related post graduate engineering experience
- Ability to obtain and maintain a secret level DOD security clearance
- Naval nuclear experience (EOOW/EWS Qualified)
- Current secret clearance through the DOD
- Experience in hands on troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical systems
