Position: Skilled Maintainer (37.5 Hour)

Introduction

The State of Connecticut Military Department (CTMD) is accepting applications for a Skilled Maintainer position located at the Theater Aviation Sustainment facility (TASM‑G) in Groton, CT.

Position Highlights
  • Full‑time, first shift – Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM (37.5 hours)
  • Regular in‑state travel in State vehicles required
  • Valid, unexpired Connecticut driver’s license required to operate State vehicles
  • Successful completion of a federal background investigation required before appointment

Job Responsibilities

The incumbent is accountable for performing skilled tasks in maintenance, equipment operation, and grounds care, and for assisting higher‑level employees. Specific duties include:

  • Building and equipment maintenance (operational and remedial), including operation of trucks five (5) ton or greater capacity or complex motorized equipment
  • Grounds care as a supervisor and/or specialized landscaping functions
  • Assisting qualified craft workers or other higher‑level employees in trade areas
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of methods, tools, equipment, materials, and procedures in the trade or work area
  • Knowledge of maintenance problems and their proper handling
  • Manual and machine operation skills for the trade or work area
  • Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and to utilize computer software
Minimum Qualifications – General Experience
  • Two (2) years of experience in one of the following areas:
    • Skilled trades
    • Landscape maintenance or vegetable gardening
    • Operation of motor trucks or large buses
Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed
  • Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for the general experience requirement.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Assisting a trades person in construction, painting, plastering, carpentry, electrical work, or plumbing tasks
  • Grounds maintenance experience (mowing, weeding, raking, shoveling, snow and ice removal with a light truck, skid steer, or tractor)
  • Proficiency in using and maintaining hand/power tools (auto‑scrubber machines, buffers, carpet cleaners, zero‑turn lawn mowers, string trimmers)
  • Basic record‑keeping skills for preventative maintenance, vehicle assignments, and work order creation; proficiency in Microsoft Office or similar platforms
  • Experience operating automobiles, trucks, or complex motorized equipment with a valid Connecticut driver’s license
  • Experience maintaining facility HVAC mechanical equipment, replacing belts, filters, strainers, etc.
Special Requirements

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications.

Physical Requirements

Incumbents must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such fitness to perform the duties. A physical examination may be required.

Working Conditions
  • Capacity to lift moderate to heavy weights
  • Exposure to significant levels of dust, heat, noise, extreme weather conditions, and risk of injury from equipment and abusive individuals
  • Potential requirement to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines; protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles may be required
