RNFA call stay

Full Time, Day shift with a rotating day off. Required call stay.

The RNFA will work under the direction and direct supervision of the surgeon. The RNFA, having acquired the necessary knowledge, judgment and skills specific to the role of RNFA, works in collaboration with the surgeon and other healthcare team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

• Work in the perioperative area in the scope of behaviors defined in Staff RN job code 3178.
• 15% – Preoperative patient management: perform nursing assessments and preoperative evaluations; communicate the plan of care with the healthcare team.
• 15% – Postoperative patient management: participate in postoperative rounds and discharge planning.
• 70% – Intraoperative performance: work under the direct supervision of the surgeon.

• Assist with closure of body planes, wound layers, subcutaneous tissue, and skin closures.
• Inject local anesthetic.
• Participate in the desiccation of tissue, provide hemostasis, and place laparoscopic trocars.
• Coordinate the camera or change robotic arms and instruments during endoscopic surgery.
• Provide exposure for the surgeon and visualize the operative site.
• Activate cautery and operate the electrosurgical unit.
• Perform specialized tissue handling, dissection, or cutting techniques such as trocar placement, preparation of allografts, and saphenous vein harvesting.

• Cannot be the sole provider in the room during the surgical timeout.
• Cannot perform the initial incision.
• Cannot mark the surgical site.
• Cannot independently write orders.
• Cannot be involved in any other role or function during the surgical procedure (scrub or circulator).

• RN licensure.
• Certification in perioperative nursing (CNOR).
• Completion of RNFA program that meets the AORN recommended education standards.
• 2+ years as an operating room nurse as both circulator and scrub.
• Must commit to call‑stay shifts.

Knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative techniques related to the procedures in which the RNFA will be first aiding.
