The City of Grovetown is currently taking applications for the position of Part-Time Firefighter/EMT. Applicants must be Georgia State Certified. This position pays $18.05 per hour. Please use the Police/Fire Application when applying for this position.
JOB SUMMARYThe purpose of this position is to protect lives and property endangered by fire and other emergency situations, to promote fire prevention and safety activities, performing rescue, driving and operating apparatus, administering first response emergency medical care, inspecting and maintaining fire apparatus equipment, conducting station tours, and performing additional tasks as assigned for City of Grovetown.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Responds to fires and performs fire suppression activities using firefighting equipment and techniques, i.e. nozzle operation, directing fire stream, and building ventilation
- Performs rescue, salvage, and overhaul operations
- Inspects assigned apparatus and equipment and performs routine maintenance
- Acts as the driver as needed including establishing fire stream, monitoring gauges, and calculating and adjusting pump pressure
- Assists in fire drills and mock disasters, including set-up and evaluation
- Participates and assists in ongoing training
- Refills air bottles, assists in hydrant, plug, and line maintenance
- Participates in physical fitness program
- Performs housekeeping/groundskeeping duties in and around fire station
- Conducts station tours
- Prepares or produces necessary reports as needed
- Participates in community relations projects as required
- Establishes and maintains working relationships with fellow employees
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Knowledge and skill in applying firefighting techniques, firefighting apparatus and equipment, hydraulics, local and state codes, and NFPA guidelines
- Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of Grovetown Public Safety as they pertain to the performance of duties related to this position
- Knowledge of City geography including City maps/streets/locations
- Knowledge of terminology used within the department
- Knowledge, skill, and ability in interpretation of complicated regulations and procedures
- Knowledge, skill, and ability to determine short and long term goals for departmental projects
- Knowledge, skill, and ability in coordinating emergency situations as they arise
- Knowledge of defensive tactics to protect self and others and proper arrest/suspect apprehension techniques
- Skill and ability to respond quickly and logically to emergency or stressful situations
- Skill and ability to understand special problems and situations created by emergencies and deal humanely with members of the general public
- Skill in using a pumper, extrication tools, power tools, ladders, positive pressure blower fan, electrical power generator, pick head axe, saws, spanner wrench, mechanical and electrical tools, and first aid medical supplies
- Skill and ability to read subdivision plans
- Skill and ability to interpret blueprints
- Skill in proactively noticing public safety hazards and correcting problems or notifying appropriate department head(s)
- Ability to be cross-trained to perform other related duties
- Ability to understand oral and written instructions
- Ability to read, write, and speak English
- Ability and skill to deal courteously and tactfully with fellow employees and the general public
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the general public
Complexity: Employee is required to follow developed, implemented, and established rules, guidelines, and policies and is required to make suggestions for updates or changes to ensure the City is in compliance with all state and federal agencies. Incumbent must have the ability to understand the scope, functions, and job duties with minimal instruction.
ContactsContacts: Contacts are generally with City officials and employees, county officials, and county employees, state and federal agencies, and members of the general public. The purpose of these contacts is to render services, or to provide or exchange information to the general public.
GuidelinesGuidelines: Employee is required to follow the implemented guidelines for all areas covered under Grovetown Public Safety. Incumbent would receive instruction from the Fire Lieutenant in general terms. Employee usually works in a team but may be required to work independently in emergency situations.
