Machine Shop Team Lead

OVERVIEW

The Machine Shop Team Lead provides leadership and direction within the machine shop, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality production. This role is responsible for safety, housekeeping, productivity, training, quality assurance, and adherence to company policies and procedures. The Team Lead acts as a facilitator, technical resource, and mentor, supporting both the workforce and management in achieving operational goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promote and maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
  • Lead and participate in plant safety programs, ensuring OSHA and environmental compliance.
  • Communicate, interpret, and enforce company policies and procedures.
  • Support the creation and maintenance of SOPs, JSAs, and equipment documentation.
  • Act as work facilitator on shift, ensuring production and quality goals are met.
  • Conduct and assist with employee training, onboarding, and performance assessments.
  • Read engineering drawings and inspect completed work for accuracy and compliance with specifications.
  • Motivate team members to achieve high levels of performance and productivity.
  • Ensure proper operation, setup, and clamping of machine shop equipment.
  • Monitor tool and equipment conditions, coordinating maintenance as needed.
  • Operate CNC machines, manual equipment, forklifts, and cranes when required.
  • Use precision measuring instruments (micrometers, bore gauges, scales, etc.).
  • Apply machining knowledge, including CBN tooling speeds, feeds, and cutting practices.
  • Provide technical support on the shop floor, including CNC programming and troubleshooting.
  • Write and maintain accurate work instructions.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and provide technical guidance.
  • Ensure machining metrics (speeds, feeds, metal removal rates) are achieved.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and repair of shop computer systems.
  • Ensure availability of required supplies and resources.
  • Lead employees independently while ensuring compliance with management goals and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical or vocational training in machining is preferred.

Experience:

  • CNC machinist experience required.
  • Previous leadership and/or supervisory experience required.
  • Proficiency in machinist tools, cutting tools, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Strong blueprint reading and interpretation skills.
  • Advanced computer skills, including Outlook, SAP, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of GIW parts and pumps preferred.

  • Frequently: Standing, walking, operating machines, using hand tools, lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Occasionally: Bending, stooping, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs.
