Purpose and Scope
The professional registered nurse Inpatient Services RN CAP 1 is an entry level designation into the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP). The role is accountable for the provision and coordination of clinically competent care, including assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation for an assigned group of patients. The RN may delegate appropriate tasks to direct patient care staff, including RNs, LVN/LPNs and Patient Care Technicians, and actively participates in decision-making, teaching, leadership functions, and quality improvement activities that enhance patient care outcomes and program operations.
PrincipalDuties and Responsibilities
- Perform all essential functions under the direction of the Supervisor and with guidance from the Educator, Preceptor, or another Registered Nurse.
- Collect and analyze patient data pre‑, during‑, and post‑treatment, document findings, and adjust the treatment plan as indicated.
- Assess learning needs of patients and families, and provide initial and ongoing education.
- Recognize abnormal patient status indicators and collaborate with health team members for input.
- Direct and provide safe, effective patient care for assigned patients as prescribed for all modality‐specific treatment procedures.
- Assess daily patient care needs and collaborate with direct and ancillary staff as needed.
- Initiate and coordinate communication with FKC and non‑FKC dialysis providers to ensure continuity of care.
- Implement, administer, monitor, and document patient responses to prescribted intradialytic transfusions, including notification of adverse reactions.
- Administer medications as prescribed and document justification and effectiveness.
- Assist with emergency response measures.
- Serve as a resource for the health care team and participate in staff training and orientation of new staff.
- Provide specialized nursing care instruction to hospital/facility staff as stipulated contractually.
- Assume assignments at outpatient facilities on an as‑needed basis.
- Complete CAP requirements for advancement.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Supervisor.
- Provide direct patient care that involves heavy lifting, moving patients, and assisting with ambulation.
- Stand for frequent, prolonged periods and bend over as required.
- Move machines and equipment of up to 200 lbs. and lift chemical or water solutions up to 30 lbs. as high as 5 feet.
- Work in a health care facility with air‑temperature control and moderate noise levels.
- Potential exposure to infectious or contagious diseases/materials.
- Work at multiple locations with the same physical demands.
- Engage in desk and computer work, interactions with patients, facility/hospital staff, and physicians.
- Travel to training/meeting sites and between assigned facilities.
- Participate in on‑call rotation, including night, weekend, holiday shifts as defined by program needs.
- Oversight of Patient Care Technicians, LVN/LPNs, and RNs as a designated Nurse in Charge after completing:
- FKC education and modality‑specific training requirements for new employees.
- Minimum 9 months experience as a RN.
- 6 months experience in acute dialysis as an RN.
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
- Current appropriate state licensure.
- Current or successful completion of CPR/BLS certification.
- Must meet practice requirements in all states of employment.
- Entry‑level for RNs with less than 2 years of nephrology nursing experience.
- Minimum 9 months experience as a Registered Nurse (12 months preferred).
- 6 months acute dialysis experience (preferred).
- Hemodialysis and/or ICU experience (preferred).
