Position: Recreation Aide/Assistant (Lifeguard) - Summer Season 2026

Summary

The position is located at the Fitness Division, Aquatics Branch of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department, CBC Gulfport, MS. The primary purpose of this position is to perform lifeguard duties which involve the safeguarding of the lives of patrons of the indoor or outdoor pool located at CBC Gulfport.

Duties
  • Responsible for the safety of swimmers in the pool.
  • Remain alert and continuously observe the swimming area to ensure safety of patrons.
  • Enforce swimming pool rules and regulations, assist swimmers having difficulty and rescue those in trouble.
  • Perform rescue work and, when necessary, render first aid until qualified medical personnel are present.
  • In case of a serious accident, call for an ambulance.
  • Prepare a complete accident report.
  • Alert supervisor of unusual circumstances.
  • Perform housekeeping tasks to maintain cleanliness, sanitation and appearance of the pool and related facilities.
  • Inspect the pool and surrounding area to ensure cleanliness and safety at all times.
  • Check chlorine and pH levels on a scheduled basis.
  • Communicate problems or concerns of the aquatic environment to the aquatics manager.
  • Determine patron eligibility and provide quality customer service to patrons.
  • Answer questions and provide program information to patrons.
  • Assist with scheduled pool parties after hours of operation or with a base‑wide special event.
  • Maintain daily logs and records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Meet federal employment suitability requirements and successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
  • Complete a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process requiring two forms of  the Form I‑9.
  • May be required to pass pre‑employment examinations.
  • Hold a valid state driver’s license to operate motor vehicles.
  • Accept salary by direct deposit or electronic funds transfer.
  • Register for Selective Service (males born after 12/31/1959).
  • Be at least 16 years old.
  • Undergo national and state background checks for positions involving youth programs.
  • Pass a swim pre‑qualification.
Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position, your resume must provide sufficient experience and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are being considered. All relevant experience must be clearly described, including volunteer and part‑time experience, with duties, responsibilities, and hours per week documented.

  • Recreation Aide NF‑0189‑01 does not have a minimum length of experience requirement.
  • Recreation Assistant NF‑0189‑02 requires at least 12 months of experience performing lifeguard duties.
  • Knowledge of pool and waterfront safety rules.
  • Knowledge of the beach environment, marine life, and beach water hazards (waterfront only).
  • Knowledge of DoD, DON, and CNIC policies and procedures governing aquatic assessment testing and certifications.
  • Knowledge of applicable MWR policies regarding the use of aquatic facilities and waterfront operations.
  • Ability to identify hazards or hazardous situations and assess a patron’s need for assistance immediately.
  • Ability to instruct on water safety, facility rules, and enforce them effectively.
  • Ability to conduct routine safety inspections to meet environmental health standards.
  • Knowledge of and ability to conduct pool chemical testing, document results, and adjust chemical imbalances as directed.
  • Skilled in surf lifesaving techniques and radio communications for safe rescue operations.
  • Ability to exercise control over a large group of people.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
Relocation Authorized
  • No payment of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) is authorized; PCS moves are not in the government’s interest.
Key Requirements/Conditions of Employment
  • Males must be registered or exempt from Selective Service.
