Project Accountant

New Jersey (Onsite with limited NYC travel)
The Opportunity

A long-standing construction subcontractor based in New Jersey is seeking a Project Accountant to support a growing portfolio of active projects across New Jersey and New York City. The firm works on technically complex, multi-phase construction projects and partners closely with general contractors and owners throughout the project lifecycle.

This role is closely embedded with project teams and plays an important part in billing accuracy, cash flow visibility, and overall project financial performance.

This position is focused on the financial management of live construction projects rather than general ledger accounting. Responsibilities include preparing monthly requisitions and payment applications, maintaining change order and billing logs, and working directly with project managers and external partners to resolve billing and collection items.

You’ll analyze job costs and project profitability, compile cash flow and forecast reports for leadership, and keep project billing documentation organized and audit-ready. The role also includes preparing lien waivers, tax documentation, and required compliance reports, along with supporting certified payroll and other compliance reporting as needed.

Initial training will take place in the NYC office, with ongoing in-person reporting there approximately once per month.

• 5+ years of construction accounting experience
• Hands-on experience with project billings, requisitions, and job cost analysis
• Prior Accounts Payable exposure within a construction environment
• Experience with Construction ERP Systems strongly preferred
• Strong Excel skills and comfort working in fast-paced project settings
• Ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision
• Base salary range of $80,000–$120,000
