We have been assigned by one of the UK's more prestigious NHS Trusts to help them recruit a Consultant in Gastro on either a Substantive or an NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months to join their successful Gastro department.
Our client is a successful and progressive District General Hospital, one of the largest in the south west with an excellent reputation for providing a comprehensive range of medical, surgical and specialist services and an excellent teaching environment. They pride themselves on providing exemplary patient‑centred care and we are supported by responsive management teams and a dedicated clinically run Improvement Network, who strive to enable all endeavours to achieve this.
The department of gastroenterology at the trust runs a comprehensive gastroenterology & hepatology service to the local area (350,000 population) with over 4,500 new outpatient referrals to the department which are managed through a combination of ‘Advice and Guidance', direct investigation and outpatient review. In addition, there were almost 11,000 endoscopy procedures performed in the last year. There are currently six gastroenterology consultants, an Associate Specialist, a specialty doctor, and the team are supported by sessions provided by two retired colleagues enabling us to provide the full range of GI services.
The trust is the regional hub for the NHS bowel cancer screening programme.
They have recently received substantial investment from NHS England, which has enabled us to purchase state‑of‑the‑art endoscopic equipment for all our procedure rooms. We have secured investment to increase the size of our satellite endoscopy unit which will soon have three procedure rooms. The Trust is currently undergoing significant modernisation with a new £80 million surgical centre/critical care build (due completion 2023) incorporating a new endoscopy suite on the Hospital site.
There has been a further £450 million funding secured for site developments currently in discussion.
The successful appointee will be asked to fulfil various duties, such as: the post‑holder will provide, to the highest possible standards, treatment and care to patients with gastroenterological disease in Somerset to a level consistent with the broader vision of a high‑quality, constantly improving Trust providing excellent clinical services. This will include inpatient, outpatient and endoscopy services, participation in the education of doctors in training, involvement in teaching and training junior doctors, and support in their professional and personal development.
The team constantly strives to improve care, participate in service improvement projects and audit (both local and national) and, in addition, work with a gastro team that has a dedicated research nurse and takes part in commercial and NIHR studies including intervention studies. One of the consultants has been awarded a £1.4 million grant from NIHR for a project looking at case finding in patients with asymptomatic liver disease.
