Controller, Finance & Banking, Financial Reporting

Industry: Consumer Goods (preferred - strongly prefer candidates out of companies that have sold products, not services)

Compensation: up to 150k based on experience

Location: Bergen County, 4-5 days onsite

Responsibilities

• Review organizational financial activity to understand overall performance and highlight patterns, areas of strength, and opportunities for improvement.
• Prepare summaries and visual materials that translate financial information into insights for leadership decision‑making.
• Take the lead in finding ways to streamline spending and improve efficiency while maintaining operational standards.
• Help shape and execute initiatives focused on improving financial outcomes.
• Maintain strong internal practices and safeguards to align with internal expectations and externally accepted guidelines.
• Regularly evaluate and refine financial workflows to improve accuracy, consistency, and timeliness.
• Oversee the preparation of key financial documents used to reflect the organization’s position and activity over specified periods.
• Ensure all required reporting is completed accurately and in accordance with applicable expectations.
• Manage core daily finance and accounting activities, including period‑end responsibilities and overall reporting oversight.
• Maintain organized, detailed documentation to support reviews related to taxes, balance‑related items, and key revenue and expense categories.
• Coordinate year‑end reporting activities and assist with external review processes.

Systems & Technical Skills

• Experience participating in or leading transitions to new financial or operational systems.
• Strong ability to build, adjust, and maintain reporting tools and dashboards within various systems and through integrations with spreadsheet‑based or business‑intelligence tools.
• Familiarity with multiple large‑scale platforms commonly used for accounting or operational management; experience limited to basic small‑business software is not sufficient.

Advanced Accounting & Reporting

• Experience supporting reporting structures that require consolidation across multiple internal groups or regions; international exposure is a strong plus.
• Ability to manage and refine internal methodologies used to allocate costs and consolidate results.
• Solid understanding of widely recognized accounting frameworks and reporting practices.
• Knowledge of cost‑related accounting concepts, with preference for experience in a product‑ or inventory‑based environment.

Tax & Compliance Understanding

• Experience working with structures involving shared ownership or distributed income.
• Awareness of requirements tied to operating across multiple locations with different compliance obligations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a finance‑ or accounting‑related discipline.
• Prior experience in a senior financial oversight position with responsibility for both daily operations and broader financial planning.
• Background in analyzing financial data, developing budgets and forecasts, and guiding cost‑focused initiatives.
• Strong working knowledge of recognized accounting approaches and regulatory expectations.
• Exceptional attention to detail, analytical strength, and problem‑solving abilities.
• Skilled in financial technology tools and general productivity software.
• Excellent communication skills and comfort working with teams across the organization.
• Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to guide and develop team members.
• At least 10 years of progressive experience in finance or accounting roles.
• Evidence of steady career advancement.
• Must have experience outside advisory or banking environments.
• Preference for candidates with backgrounds in product distribution, multi‑channel operations, or online‑centric business models.
