Job Description

Sr. Medical Laboratory Scientist – Hackensack, NJ, Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with rotational weekends.

Quest Diagnostics is hiring a Sr. Medical Laboratory Scientist in Hackensack, NJ. This role is a hospital‑based position at HUMC.

The Senior Medical Technologist is proficient in all principle duties of a Medical Technologist I and II. This Subject Matter Expert (SME) is responsible for complex laboratory testing and has broad decision‑making authority and independence. The Senior Med Tech provides technical direction to staff regarding complex and non‑routine testing and serves as the point of contact for inquiries from clients or sales representatives.

The Senior is responsible for investigating and resolving analytical testing problems, recommending courses of action, and training staff under the direction of the Supervisor in accordance with federal, state, and local guidelines.

Pay range: $33.81 - $55.81 per hour

Salary offers are based on several factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and certifications. Successful candidates may be eligible for an annual performance bonus.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates all characteristics of Med Tech I and II
  • Applies evidence‑based criteria to correlate and interpret laboratory testing data
  • Performs clinical validation to optimize laboratory testing as directed
  • Serves as a technical subject matter expert by demonstrating problem‑solving and troubleshooting instrumentation and assays
  • Investigates and resolves analytical testing problems, recommends course of action when limits are exceeded, and responds to non‑routine/complex inquiries from clients and sales representatives
  • Provides technical direction to team members regarding all testing matters
  • Acts as trainer and SME in education; designs and implements training material; evaluates technical competencies and recommends continuing education
  • Interprets trends and variables when implementing QC theory and policies
  • Reviews validity check requests and recommends appropriate action, considering specimen limitations, timing, and quality of repeat testing
  • Expedites workflow to maximize productivity by evaluating production systems, recommending enhancements, and coordinating resolution of production issues with other departments
  • Reviews unit activities to ensure compliance with departmental policies and federal, state, and local regulations
  • Competent in most areas within the department
  • Participates in special projects as assigned
  • Performs other duties as directed by Supervisor
Qualifications Required Work Experience
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years clinical experience with 2 years in the present department
  • If SR MLS is required to perform delegated supervisory duties:
    • Master of Science degree in biological or chemical science and 2 years of work experience as a Medical Lab Scientist in the designated laboratory specialty
    • At least 4 years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience after qualifying as a Medical Lab Scientist
    • If operating within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, at least 6 years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience after qualifying as a Medical Lab Scientist
  • If HEW certified, 8 years or more in the same department
Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time
