Phlebotomist III – Teaneck

The Phlebotomist III plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, troubleshooting issues, participating in training, and recommending improvements to workflow. This position focuses on accurate specimen handling, patient-centered communication, and strict adherence to established procedures and safety regulations in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and patient care.
  • Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, according to established laboratory procedures.
  • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
  • Check test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to confirm correctness before processing.
  • Package specimens securely for transport, following protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Store specimens at the required temperatures and place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, accurately labeling them in accordance with protocol.
  • Follow detailed procedures specific to each protocol to ensure specimens are suitable for transport and testing.
  • Update patient information accurately in the system and record maintenance data as needed.
  • Perform decontamination tasks and maintain a clean and safe work area in compliance with laboratory standards.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and environmental guidelines.
  • Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and regulations.
  • Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries, following applicable policies.
  • Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection and workflow and make recommendations to improve efficiency.
  • Participate in training activities, sharing knowledge and best practices with colleagues as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, blood draws, venipuncture, and specimen collection.
  • Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test orders and protocols.
  • Strong attention to detail when matching requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying test information.
  • Ability to clearly explain specimen collection procedures to patients in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Understanding of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 5–7 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a non-float phlebotomy role with consistent location-based responsibilities.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced clinical or laboratory setting with multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel.
  • Ability to handle telephone inquiries and read laboratory results to callers in accordance with policies.
  • Commitment to ongoing training and professional development through annual department trainings.
  • Ability to contribute to workflow improvements and assist with troubleshooting operational issues.

Work Environment

This role is based in a clinical laboratory setting in Teaneck, working Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch break each day.
