Dietitian Of The Cancer Center

The dietitian of the cancer center will provide nutritional services on designated units compatible with established standards of practice and in compliance with state and federal regulations.

Responsibilities:

Clinical Responsibilities:

1. Provides medical nutrition therapy to patients on referral from physicians, nurse practitioners, advanced practice nurses, nurses, and other health care professionals based on established high risk screening criteria or by patient self-referral.

2. Develops, implements, documents and evaluates a nutrition care plan, based on the assessment of nutritional needs for all referred patients using evidence based practice guidelines.

3. Confers with physicians and medical staff personnel as needed to provide personalized medical nutrition therapy.

4. Reviews patient's medical record and extracts information pertinent to nutritional assessment.

5. Visits and interviews patients and/or significant other in assigned area.

6. Counsels patients and/or family members on various nutrition topics including but not limited to: nutrition related side effects of cancer treatment modalities, maintaining nutrition status during and after cancer treatment, healthy diet guidelines for health and well being and in survivorship, institution of enteral nutrition therapy as needed, and adaptation of diet plans to meet individual life styles.

7. Develops, implements and evaluates nutrition educational materials.

8. Consults with in-patient dietitians or those from outside facilities as needed to provide appropriate nutritional care across the continuum of care.

9. Lifts a minimum of 30 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 75 lbs. and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.

10. Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).

Educational Responsibilities:

1. Develops and implements food and nutrition programs for patients, caregivers and staff.

2. Supports and provides guidance and assistance for nutrition programs presented by outside sources.

3. Represents Hackensack Meridian Health by presenting nutrition topics for support groups, community groups, colleges and universities and professional conferences and symposiums either as a speaker or writer.

General Responsibilities:

1. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

2. Adheres to Hackensack Meridian Health Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications:

Education,

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. Bachelor's degree in nutrition or dietetics from an accredited institution, meeting the didactic requirements of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

2. Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.

3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

4. Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office platforms.

Licenses and Certifications

Required:

1. Must currently be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and maintain 75 continuing education credits every 5 years in the area of nutrition counseling and medical nutrition therapy.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

1. Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition (CSO) preferred.
