Position: SQL Database Administrator (Azure)

A growing professional services organization is seeking an experienced SQL Database Administrator (DBA) to manage, optimise, and support its critical Microsoft SQL Server and Azure-based data environments. This role will be responsible for ensuring database availability, performance, security, and scalability while supporting business-critical applications and enterprise data initiatives.

The ideal candidate will possess strong expertise in Microsoft SQL Server administration, performance tuning, backup and recovery, high availability, and Azure database technologies. This individual will partner with infrastructure, application, and business teams to maintain reliable database operations, support cloud modernization efforts, and drive continuous improvements across the organization's data platform.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer, monitor, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server databases in production and non-production environments.
  • Manage database performance, including query optimization, index tuning, execution plan analysis, and ongoing capacity planning.
  • Implement and maintain database backup, recovery, disaster recovery, and business continuity strategies.
  • Configure and support SQL Server high availability solutions, including Always On Availability Groups, replication, and failover technologies.
  • Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot SQL scripts, stored procedures, views, and database objects.
  • Support and optimise SSIS packages, ETL processes, and data integration workflows.
  • Administer SQL Server Agent jobs, maintenance plans, database security, and user access controls.
  • Monitor database health and proactively identify performance bottlenecks, storage concerns, and system issues.
  • Manage and support Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and related Azure data services.
  • Support Azure identity and authentication integrations, including Microsoft Entra  (Azure AD).
  • Assist with Azure data platform initiatives, including Microsoft Fabric and cloud migration projects.
  • Partner with application teams to troubleshoot database-related issues impacting enterprise systems.
  • Develop automation solutions utilizing Power Shell and other scripting technologies to improve database administration and operational efficiency.
  • Create and maintain database documentation, standards, procedures, and operational runbooks.
  • Participate in database upgrades, patching, maintenance activities, and infrastructure projects.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a SQL Server Database Administrator in enterprise production environments.
  • Advanced expertise in Microsoft SQL Server administration, including:
    Performance tuning and optimization, Index management, Query analysis and execution plans, Backup and recovery, Security and permissions management, and Database maintenance and monitoring
  • Strong experience with: SQL Server Agent, SSIS, SSRS, and ETL development and support
  • Experience supporting high availability and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure database technologies, including:
    Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure Storage, and Azure Monitoring and Log Analytics
  • Experience administering Microsoft Entra  (Azure AD) integrations and database authentication.
  • Strong Power Shell scripting and automation experience.
  • Knowledge of database security best practices, compliance requirements, and data governance principles.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with technical and business stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to prioritise multiple initiatives in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting professional services, legal, or financial services organizations.
  • Exposure to Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse Analytics, or modern cloud data platforms.
  • Experience with database migrations from on-premises SQL Server to Azure.
  • Familiarity with application integrations, APIs, and enterprise business systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Microsoft certifications such as:
    Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300), Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104), or Microsoft Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate
  • Competitive base salary commensurate with experience.
