Overview
This is an open continuous announcement until September 30, 2026. Qualified applicants will be considered and referred as vacancies become available. Positions will be within the Mental Health service at the Lyons Campus. The Registered Nurse (RN) demonstrates integration of biopsychosocial concepts - cognitive skills - and technically competent practice while providing care to clients. Assesses - plans - implements - and evaluates care based on age-specific components.
QualificationsBasic Requirements:
- English Language Proficiency
- In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) - no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by ACEN or CCNE
- OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program
- Upon achievement of a State license - the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program

- OR Graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing - possession of a current - full - active - and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse
- Credit for foreign nursing education higher than an associate degree requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized evaluation
- Current - full - active - and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state/territory or the District of Columbia
- Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: candidates who otherwise meet basic education requirements but do not possess licensure may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level on a 120-day temporary appointment while pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case basis).

- Nurse I - Level I: ADN or Diploma in Nursing with basic care responsibilities
- Nurse I - Level II: ADN/ Diploma + 1 year specialized nursing experience OR BSN with no additional experience
- Nurse I - Level III: ADN/ Diploma + 2 years experience OR BSN + 1 year experience OR MSN with no additional experience OR related master’s degree with BSN and no additional experience
- Nurse II: BSN + 2 years experience or MSN with one year experience or related field with BSN and one year of experience or Doctoral degree in Nursing with no experience
- Nurse III: MSN with two years of specialized experience or related field with BSN and two years of specialized experience or Doctoral degree with related experience

- This is an Open Continuous Announcement (OCA) used to fill multiple Registered Nursing vacancies at the Lyons facility of the VA NJ Health Care System
- Eligible candidates will be referred as vacancies arise
- The specific duties will be based on the unit/assignment for which the applicant is selected
- Provide general registered nurse duties including collecting patient data by interview, examination, and records review; completing the assessment form including bio/psych/social and physical and discharge needs within the required time frame
- Maintain practice-specific competencies and mandatory reviews (e.g., equipment, aging, chemotherapy safety, code cart/defibrillator checks, IV devices, skin assessment)
- Provide age-specific care for adults (18-39), (40-64), (65-74), and geriatric (over 80+), promoting independence and self-care; involve family or caregiver as appropriate
- Assess age-specific care requirements, cultural, religious, and gender variables; develop appropriate care plans
- Apply advanced knowledge and skills in delivering care to patients with simple and complex needs; delegate assignments appropriately
- Evaluate quality of patient care and initiate quality improvement activities
- Apply established standards of care in development, implementation, and evaluation of care plans
- Document measurable goals including teaching and health maintenance in consultation with the provider, patient, family, and health care team
