Trauma Unit Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Or Physician Assistant

The Trauma Unit Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) or Physician Assistant utilizes a patient-centered coordinated care model, demonstrating competencies in leadership, direct clinical practice, consultation/collaboration, coaching/guiding, research, and ethical decision-making. The APN works collaboratively with the practice/hospital team to assess, plan, and implement care for individuals with health and safety needs.

The Hackensack University Medical Center APP Trauma Service provides direct and indirect patient care optimizing patient safety to a patient population consisting of, but not limited to, clients from GI/GU, thoracic, vascular, neurosurgery, GYN oncology, trauma, OB-GYN, and orthopedic subspecialties. 24/7/365 coverage rotating with the APP team.

Responsibilities include performing and documenting accurate, complete, and relevant history and physical assessments appropriate for the patient's age, gender, and clinical problem; ordering, performing, and interpreting laboratory tests and diagnostic studies/procedures in collaboration with physicians and consultants as appropriate; managing general medical and surgical conditions based on comprehensive knowledge of etiologies, risk factors, pathophysiology, and the indications and contraindications of pharmacologic agents and other treatment modalities;

prescribing medication safely and effectively in accordance with best practices, hospital policy, and NJ regulations, providing patient education as needed; and providing care that is patient- and family-centered, compassionate, and effective for the promotion of health and treatment of disease.

Qualifications include a graduate of an NLN/AACN accredited nursing program, a master's or doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, experience in a relevant patient care setting, national provider identifier (NPI), prescriptive authority through CDS and DEA registration according to New Jersey state law, collaborative agreement with physicians on staff, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and proficiency with computer platforms, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Licenses and certifications required include NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License, Advance Practice Nurse License, BLS AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification, Board certified by AANP or ANCC, AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification, and AGACNP acute care cert.
