Essential Job Functions

This is an entry-level clerical position performing case processing duties and responsibilities daily which entails a high volume of data entry work for multiple case types. The Judiciary Clerk provides accurate and efficient customer service to the public and court related personnel in all areas of the Wicomico County District Court.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Complete processing of all filings in the Civil department including but not limited to new suits, renewals, writs, garnishments, oral exams, show causes, domestic violence, peace orders and emergency evaluations; work reports including 3-507 and expired judgments; prepare dockets for the courtrooms.

Enter and process incoming filings from File & Serve or over the counter for Criminal/Traffic; send motions to Judge for review and enter Judge’s rulings; process postponements and confirm trial dates with attorneys; assign cases to or remove cases from specific dockets and courtrooms; answer phone calls; verify bond paperwork; issue commitments, releases, bench warrants, show causes, and writs; process VOPs, JTPs, FCCs and Appeals;

print invoices for cashier and review docket pages of court proceedings.

Assist general public and justice partners at the counter; utilize language line for individuals at the counter needing an interpreter; provide outstanding customer service; provide procedural information regarding District Court functions; prepare true test and certified copies upon request.

Perform any additional duties or assignments as assigned by Supervisor, County Clerk, Administrative and/or Lead Courtroom Clerk.

Education

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience

One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.

A Bachelor’s Degree may substitute the required work experience. A Paralegal/Associate’s Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience. A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Knowledge of general office practices, procedures, and equipment; standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary; basic English and arithmetic skills.

Skill in customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently; typing on a personal computer; accuracy and attention to detail.

Ability to use standard office and business equipment including personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, microfilm machine, register, scanner, fax machine, etc.; use and maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems; communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel both verbally and in writing; understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures;

maintain respectful, effective, and harmonious working relationships with office staff; be organized, efficient and prioritize work; understand and carry out complex written and verbal instructions and accept direction from supervisor; exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys; follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment; use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling;

exercise independent judgment in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation; accept changes and adjustments to work assignments as necessary; multi-task in high pressure working environment and…
