Main Purpose of JobThe Floating Library Assistant supports the delivery of library services across multiple correctional facility libraries within the Central Region. The position assists librarians in providing access to library resources, supporting educational programming, and maintaining daily library operations that promote literacy, education, personal development, and successful community reentry for incarcerated individuals.
Working under the direction of Correctional Education librarians and leadership, the Floating Library Assistant provides operational, programmatic, and logistical support to ensure consistent access to library services and programming across participating facilities. Duties include assisting with program preparation and facilitation, supporting patron services, maintaining library materials and records, and helping ensure that libraries operate in accordance with Correctional Education policies and institutional procedures.
Library services are delivered in alignment with Correctional Education policies, institutional procedures, and the American Library Association (ALA) Standards for Library Services for the Incarcerated and Detained, supporting equitable access to information, education resources, and library programming.
POSITION DUTIES- Program Support and Delivery:
The assistant supports the preparation and delivery of library programs by organizing materials, assisting with setup, and supporting program facilitation. Programs are implemented as planned and contribute to literacy, educational engagement, and patron participation. - Library Operations Supports:
The assistant supports the preparation and delivery of library programs by organizing materials, assisting with setup, and supporting program facilitation. Programs are implemented as planned and contribute to literacy, education engagement, and patron participation. - Patron Services:
The assistant supports daily library operations by assisting with locating materials, accessing resources, and participating in library services. Interactions contribute to a welcoming and structured library environment. - Evening Library Services and Program Support:
The assistant provides afternoon and evening library services that expand patron access to library resources and programming. Services support consistent engagement during hours when access is traditionally limited. - Collection Maintenance:
Library materials are organized, shelved, and maintained to ensure accessibility and usability. The assistant supports inventory, organization, and basic upkeep of the collection. - Record Keeping:
Library records, circulation data. and program documentation are maintained accurately and in a timely manner under the direction of the supervising librarian. - Professional
Collaboration:
The assistant works collaboratively with librarians, Correctional Education staff, and institutional personnel. Duties are performed in accordance with Correctional Education policies, institutional procedures, and expectations for professional conduct within a correctional environment.
- Experience:
Six years of experience planning and conducting employee development and training.
Notes:
- 1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of experience planning, conducting or coordinating training or staff development activities for the required experience.
- 2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in education and training classification or education and training specialty codes in the education and training field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
- Experience working with adult learners or underserved populations
- Experience supporting educational programs or group activities
- Experience working in secure or institutional environments
- Strong organizational and communication skills
