Position: Bridge Testing Technician (Transportation Engineering Technician III)

Bridge Testing Technician (Transportation Engineering Technician III)

Grade 12 (8448), State Highway Administration – Office of Materials Technology – Anne Arundel County.

Nature of Work

Assist the Bridge Team Crew Chief in performing bridge deck and substructure condition survey activities statewide.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in leading and directing crew members in testing, collecting samples and data.
  • Drafting reports, analyzing data, and submitting for review using Computer‑Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software.
  • Assisting with specialized nondestructive testing (NDT) using 3‑D GPR on bridges and pavements.
  • Evaluating data and drafting reports.
  • Assisting in reviewing consultant work and providing progress reports.
  • Performing bridge condition surveys with limited supervision and reporting directly to the Bridge Team Crew Chief.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
  • Three (3) years of technical engineering related work in design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.
  • One and a half (1.5) years of experience in bridge deck testing, transportation infrastructure inspection, or pavement and bridge maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the principles of basic mathematics and ability to perform basic mathematical computations.
  • Basic knowledge of CADD using Micro Station.
  • Basic knowledge of temporary traffic control standards and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Basic knowledge of federal highway regulations and criteria for in‑service bridge conditions.
  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn basic functions on computer and keyboard.
  • Effective communication skills in a team setting.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions.
Special Requirements
  • Must be able to routinely travel statewide with overnight stays of up to two (2) weeks for data collection.
  • Available to work extended hours during the work week and occasionally during the weekend for data collection.
  • Must possess a valid Maryland motor‑vehicle operator’s license.
  • Must obtain a Temporary Traffic Control Manager certification within the probationary period.
Additional Information

Applicants may substitute education in a civil‑engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university for experience at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of required experience.

An associate degree in engineering, construction management, or surveying from an accredited institution is considered equivalent to two years of required experience.
