Overview
SUMMARY STATEMENT
The Police Officer position is a Sworn Position that requires a Maryland Police & Corrections Training Commission certification. This full-time position works 37.5 hours per week. The Police Officer is responsible for enforcing college policies, procedures, and directives related to campus security, safety, and traffic control, in compliance with the HCC Police Policies and Procedure Manual. Officers will enforce all State and Local Laws in compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
Additionally, the Police Officer assists with fire prevention and compliance with safety codes and regulations on the college campus.
Successful completion of a certified entry level police academy and the ability to be certified by the Maryland Police Training Commission as a Police Officer. A minimum of 3 years experience in law enforcement; an AA Degree or higher is desired but not required.
Skills and AbilitiesMust have ability to interpret college security and safety regulations and state and local laws; ability to think and act quickly in emergencies; ability to communicate well, both orally and in writing; ability to interact tactfully with students, staff, and the general public.
Additional RequirementsValid motor vehicle operator's license; reliably report for duty assignments on time; compliance to the Police Officer's Policies and Procedures manual and the ability to work a flexible schedule which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Working EnvironmentMust be certified by the Maryland Police and Corrections Training Commission, or subject to certification by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission based on Entry Level Police Training received outside the state of Maryland and maintain all required police certifications set forth by the state. Police Officers will wear the uniform of the day as directed by the Chief of Police and will maintain his/her uniform so that a clean, neat, fit for duty appearance is maintained.
The job task analysis conducted by the Department for the position of Police Officer identified several physical tasks which require the readiness described above. Some of these are:
- Sitting at a desk or table with some walking, standing, bending or stooping, or carrying of light objects.
- Standing or walking for long periods of time.
- Repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or crawling.
- Running, chasing, jumping.
- Grappling or fighting with others.
- Lifting or carrying objects up to 50 lbs.
- Climbing over or through obstacles.
In accordance with the Maryland Public Safety Article 3-201 and 3-209, each Police Officer must complete the following MPCTC objectives annually:
- Demonstrate a safe procedure to climb over a barrier.
- Demonstrate the ability to pull/drag a 150lb individual (or similar object) 15 feet.
- Demonstrate the ability to run at full speed for a distance of at least 300 feet.
- Demonstrate the ability to run up and down at least two (2) flights of stairs.
