General Definition Of Work:

Performs intermediate protective service work operating fire apparatus in emergency situations and difficult semiskilled and skilled work operating and maintaining automotive and construction equipment and monitoring electrical circuits, runway and taxiway lights and general maintenance of the airport and associated facilities. Direction is provided by the Airport Maintenance Supervisor.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:

Through knowledge of the principles and practices of operating light to medium construction and snow removal, equipment; thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; some knowledge of the standard techniques and practices of high voltage (480volt) electrical wiring, some knowledge of FAA airfield lighting specifications;

some knowledge of airport radio procedures; some knowledge of applicable safety precautions of the trade; ability to perform manual labor in varying weather conditions; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and thorough knowledge of Aircraft Rescue Firefighting and associated equipment operations. Ability to be flexible in work schedule and work holidays and weekends as required.

Education And Experience:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in operation and maintenance of light to medium motorized equipment including fire apparatus and a minimum of five years fire service experience. Airline ground handling experience desirable.

Physical Requirements:

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly;

hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, operation of emergency vehicles, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities;

the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Special Requirements:
