Correctional Counselor – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)

Position Summary

The Correctional Counselor supports the day‑to‑day needs of detained individuals within an immigration detention facility operating under U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention standards. The counselor serves as a key point of contact for detainees within assigned housing communities and helps ensure that daily living conditions, supplies, and facility services are delivered in an orderly and professional manner.

Correctional Counselors work closely with security staff, program staff, and facility leadership to maintain a safe, well organized, and respectful housing environment. The position does not serve in the direct security chain of command but functions as a senior staff resource assigned to specific housing communities or program areas.

Resident Services and Housing Support
  • Serve as a primary staff contact for detainees within assigned housing communities.
  • Monitor daily living conditions within housing units and report issues related to cleanliness, sanitation, or facility maintenance.
  • Ensure detainees have appropriate access to required items such as clothing, bedding, hygiene supplies, and other approved personal property.
  • Coordinate with facility departments to address resident needs related to housing conditions or daily living requirements.
  • Encourage compliance with facility rules and promote a safe and orderly housing environment.
Housing Unit Environment
  • Conduct routine walkthroughs of assigned housing areas to monitor living conditions and unit operations.
  • Identify and report facility maintenance issues, sanitation concerns, or operational problems affecting housing units.
  • Support efforts to maintain clean, orderly, and well managed living areas.
  • Work collaboratively with security staff to address operational concerns within housing communities.
Resident Communication and Support
  • Provide information to detainees regarding facility procedures, schedules, and available services.
  • Assist detainees with routine questions or concerns related to housing conditions or facility operations.
  • Promote respectful communication between detainees and staff while reinforcing facility rules and expectations.
Documentation and Reporting
  • Maintain appropriate records related to housing unit conditions, supply distribution, and detainee concerns.
  • Report operational issues, maintenance needs, or safety concerns to facility leadership.
  • Communicate relevant information to appropriate facility staff.
Program Support (Assigned Positions)
  • Some Correctional Counselors may be assigned to support facility programs and activities.
