Reports To: Transit Operations Supervisor
Performs responsible semiskilled work in the safe and proper operation of commercial transit vehicles. Provides direction from the Transit Operations Supervisor and occasionally other management and office personnel.
- Makes thorough and appropriate pre‑trip inspections, reporting any noted defects as required.
- Picks up, transports, and discharges passengers according to established procedures.
- Assists passengers boarding or disembarking transit vehicles when requested.
- Makes maintain order and discipline among transit passengers.
- Assures proper collection of fares or other payment media.
- Adheres to prescribed routes and schedules to the extent possible.
- Maintains high‑quality passenger relations.
- Attains a working knowledge of bus schedules and routes and carries timetables to assist with passenger inquiries.
- Produces any required reports in an accurate and timely manner.
- Supplements demand‑response driver positions when needed.
- Performs other related work duties as required.
General knowledge of principles and practices of operating a commercial transit passenger vehicle; thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations; general knowledge of the skill and care required in operating the equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; dependability; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Education and ExperienceHigh‑school graduation or equivalent; considerable experience in operating motorized equipment; good customer‑relations skills.
Physical RequirementsThis is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, and negligible effort constantly, and some medium work requiring up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 20 pounds frequently, with reaching, pushing, fingering, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required; hearing and visual acuity are necessary for operating the vehicle and for observing surroundings.
Special Requirements- A valid Class "B" Commercial Driver’s License with air‑brake and passenger endorsements.
- Applicants without a Class "B" license at the time of hire must obtain a Class "B" learner’s permit within 60 calendar days from the date of hire.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Class "B" license within the first 6 months from the date of hire.
