Summary

The Transportation Mechanic performs skilled mechanical and technical duties to maintain and repair District buses, automotive, light, and heavy equipment, including diesel equipment. The goal is to keep the district buses, cars, pickups, and equipment in a state of operating excellence, presenting as little problems or interruptions as possible to the educational program.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid driver's license with Class B CDL passenger and school bus endorsements.
  • Ability to use standard District technology required.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, principles and practices, tools, and objectives of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair, with particular reference to school bus maintenance and equipment.
  • Knowledge of installation, diagnosis, servicing, and repair of gasoline and diesel engines, brake systems, steering and suspension systems, hydraulic systems, power and transmission systems, heating and cooling systems, vehicle electrical systems, computerized engine controls and related components and systems.
  • Spanish language skills or bilingual/biliterate preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Inspects and performs preventive and corrective maintenance of the Districts buses, automotive, light, and heavy duty equipment, both gas and diesel.
  • Performs maintenance and safety inspection functions including but not limited to, inspecting and replacing component parts such as starters, alternators, generators, batteries, hydraulic cylinders, carburetors, brake systems, and related components.
  • Services vehicles and equipment with fluids and lubricants, performing tune‑ups, clutch and brake adjustments, mounting and balancing tires, and servicing front end steering and suspension systems.
  • Diagnoses, repairs and overhauls a variety of systems including mechanical, electrical, heating and cooling, emissions, hydraulic, air brake, power train, chassis, gasoline and diesel power plants and fuel systems and related mechanical systems.
  • Diagnoses and repairs electronic engine, brakes, and transmission controls.
  • Performs welding repairs and fabricates parts and equipment.
  • Maintains, cleans and repairs shop tools, equipment and work areas.
  • Works an efficient and effective system of routine automotive maintenance and preventive care.
  • Promotes high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work‑connected areas.
  • Be able to perform all responsibilities required by school bus drivers.
  • Fill in as bus driver when needed.
  • Perform duties as required by the transportation supervisor.
  • Work independently and with a team to maintain a clean, appropriate, and friendly work environment.
  • Interact with students, parents, staff, faculty and administration effectively and professionally.
  • Follow oral and written instructions and observe District, State and Federal policies and procedures.
  • Respect and practice confidentiality both in and out of school with regard to records, activities, and communications relating to all students, parents/guardians, and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of reading and interpreting maps, documents, and instructions furnished in a variety of formats, not limited to safety rules and regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Skill in operating a computer, computer printer, copy machine, phone, fax machine, or other related office equipment.
  • Skill in communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in effectively communicating in one‑on‑one and small group situations to parents, students, and other employees of the District.
  • Skill in interpreting and implementing a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
