Job Title  Marine Dispatcher
Location  Halifax, Nova Scotia
Job Overview  The Atlantic Pilotage Authority (APA) is a federal Crown corporation responsible for providing safe and efficient marine pilotage services in Atlantic Canada. APA’s dispatch operations are a critical part of this network, ensuring the safe movement of ships into and out of 21 ports across the region. This unionised, full‑time role is based in Halifax and operates on a rotational 4‑day on/4‑day off schedule with 12‑hour shifts (7am‑7pm & 7pm‑7am).

A comprehensive training programme is provided over several months.
Responsibilities (English)   Coordinate pilot assignments based on requests, vessel information, and port‑specific regulations.
Communicate with agents, captains, vessel traffic services, and other stakeholders to confirm and clarify scheduling needs.
Use APA’s internal dispatch system (DABS) to enter and verify vessel data, monitor ship traffic, and update operational records.
Operate various communication systems, including radio, e‑mail, and phone lines.
Prepare reports and contribute to system accuracy through regular data validation.
Support the training of new dispatch team members and participate in departmental meetings.
Responsabilités (Français)   Coordonner les affectations des pilotes en fonction des demandes, des renseignements sur les navires et des règlements spécifiques aux ports.
Communiquer avec les agents, capitaines, services de circulation des navires et autres intervenants, et clarifier les besoins en matière d’ordonnancement.
Utiliser le système de répartition interne (DABS) de l’APA pour saisir et vérifier les données des navires, surveiller la circulation maritime et mettre à jour les dossiers opérationnels.
Employer divers systèmes de communication, notamment une radio, le courriel et des lignes téléphoniques.
Préparer des rapports et contribuer à l’exactitude du système au moyen d’une validation régulière des données.
Soutenir la formation des nouveaux membres de l’équipe de répartiteurs et participer aux réunions de service.
Qualifications (English)   A minimum of 2+ years of experience in logistics, dispatching, operations coordination, or similar fast‑paced environments.
Excellent communication and customer service skills; comfortable handling a high volume of inquiries under pressure.
Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in time‑sensitive and ambiguous situations.
Comfortable working with technology, including dispatch systems, databases, and Microsoft Office.
Understanding of policies, procedures, and regulations; experience in regulated industries is considered an asset.
Familiarity with Atlantic Canada’s geography and/or the marine sector is helpful.
Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.
Compétences (Français)   Au moins deux années d’expérience en logistique, chaîne d’approvisionnement, coordination des opérations ou des environnements de service à la clientèle dynamiques similaires.
Excellentes aptitudes pour la communication et le service à la clientèle; aisance pour traiter un volume élevé de demandes sous pression.
Capacité de travailler de façon indépendante et de prendre des décisions raisonnables dans des situations pressantes et ambiguës.
À l’aise pour travailler avec la technologie, notamment des systèmes de répartition, des bases de données et Microsoft Office.
Compréhension des politiques, procédures et règlements—l’expérience reliée à des secteurs réglementés est considérée comme un atout.
Connaissance de la géographie du Canada atlantique et/ou du secteur maritime utile, mais pas impérative.
Bilinguisme (français-anglais), un atout.
