The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SSVP) is a Catholic lay organization dedicated to serving people in need through person-to-person assistance, advocacy, and compassionate support. Through local conferences and councils, our members work within communities to provide practical help while promoting dignity, hope, and social justice.
The Atlantic Regional Council is seeking a volunteer legal professional to assist with a governance project involving federal incorporation and the development of bylaws that align with national policies and legal requirements. Recent national governance reviews have highlighted the importance of ensuring bylaws comply with both SSVP governance standards and applicable Canadian legislation.
Scope of the Volunteer Role
The successful volunteer would provide guidance and support in the following areas:
Advising on federal incorporation requirements for the Atlantic Regional Council.
Assisting with the preparation and review of incorporation documents.
Supporting the development and drafting of bylaws.
Ensuring governance documents align with applicable federal legislation and nonprofit best practices.
Providing advice regarding governance structure, roles, and authorities.
Reviewing draft documents and offering recommendations for improvement.
Collaborating with Regional Council leadership throughout the process.
Desired Experience and Attributes
We are seeking someone who possesses:
Experience in nonprofit, charitable, or corporate law.
Knowledge of federal incorporation processes in Canada.
Experience drafting or reviewing bylaws and governance policies.
An interest in supporting community organizations and charitable work.
The ability to work collaboratively with volunteers and board members.
Familiarity with governance practices for nonprofit organizations would be an asset.
Time Commitment
The time commitment is flexible and will depend on the volunteer’s availability and the needs of the project. Most work can be completed remotely.
