Reporting to the Substation Construction Foreman, Apprentices will support the construction of medium and high voltage electrical systems within a substation environment, ensuring project execution is delivered effectively and safely. This project will increase reliability for customers by strengthening the inter‑provincial power grid connection and supporting the continued expansion of renewable energy production.
Please Note:
This is a field‑based position working 10 hour days on a schedule of 5 days on / 2 days off at sites in Salisbury, NB;
Memramcook, NB; and Onslow, NS. This is a unionized worksite — candidates must be willing to join the applicable union if selected.
Duties and Responsibilities Support the construction of medium and high voltage electrical systems
Assist with substation steel erection, cable tray building, and cable trench, bus, HV equipment and steel structure installation
Contribute to the installation and commissioning of medium and high voltage transformers, switch gear, and associated equipment
Help execute cable installation for medium and high voltage power distribution systems
Participate in terminating medium and high voltage cables, ensuring accuracy and compliance with industry standards
Interpret medium and high voltage electrical blueprints, schematics, and diagrams for planning and executing installations and terminations in construction projects
Support material deliveries and inventorying of materials as per the assigned work fronts, identifying any potential risks and bringing to the Site Supervisors and Foreman’s attention
Ensure that Valard’s equipment and tools are being used in a safe and professional manner; the tools are accounted for daily; any defective tools and equipment are tagged out of service and brought to the Foreman’s attention
Maintain daily diary for record keeping purposes
Follow Valard’s Safety Policies and Procedures
Qualifications Registered, or eligible to register, as an Electrical Apprentice with the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency or Apprenticeship and Occupational Certification New Brunswick
Knowledge of construction disciplines, safety regulations
Ability to read and comprehend blueprints
Comprehension of pertinent basic Equipotential Bonding and Grounding Principles and of lock out tag out procedures
Must hold a Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
Applicants must have legal authorization to work in Canada with no restrictions
Candidates must be willing to join the union if selected
Preferred Skills / Qualifications Demonstrated expertise in medium and high voltage electrical systems, particularly in construction settings and cable terminations
Experience in medium‑to‑high‑voltage substation construction
