1) SUBSTITUTE TEACHER / EXEMPT,

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: SUBSTITUTE COORDINATOR, CAMPUS PRINCIPAL AND/OR DESIGNEE

JOB SUMMARY
  • In the absence of the regular classroom teacher, the substitute upholds/provides appropriate learning activities, experiences and classroom management for students to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth.
  • In the absence of the classroom aide, the substitute paraprofessional upholds/provides appropriate learning activities, experiences and classroom management for students to fulfill their potential under the direction of the classroom teacher.
  • In the absence of clerical/office staff, the substitute paraprofessional fills in to maintain the daily operation of office procedures and duties.
JOB SCOPE
  • Substitute teacher directly supervises students in assigned classes and educational assistants.
  • Substitute paraprofessional is under the direction of the campus principal, classroom teacher or designee.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated times and locations.
  • Follow the daily lesson plans provided by the classroom teacher or designee and present subject matter according to Texas Education Agency guidelines.
  • Provide opportunities for students to participate actively and successfully.
  • Evaluate and provide feedback on student progress during instruction.
  • Monitor students in accordance with IEP and teacher direction.
  • Serve as a positive role model supporting the mission of the school district.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to student maturity.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adapt to changes in a regular school day.
  • Follow established classroom discipline management plan, maintain order, administer discipline per board policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect student privacy.
  • Encourage and model classroom behavior standards.
  • Take reasonable precautions to protect equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Report immediately to appropriate authorities in event of injury, illness or behavioral/disciplinary issues.
  • Document lessons and activities for teacher review.
  • Care for school property, supplies and materials.
  • Dismiss students per instructions.
  • Follow established arrival and dismissal protocols.
  • Manage allotted learning time to maximize student achievement.
  • Provide a safe environment to protect students.
  • Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community.
  • Promote the school positively and use acceptable communication skills to present information clearly.
  • Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional improvement.
  • Demonstrate human relations skills that are professional, ethical and responsible.
  • Keep informed of and comply with state, district and school regulations and policies.
  • Comply with and support district and school regulations and policies.
  • Model non‑discriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by building administrators per district/school policies.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
  • Work located in a classroom or office environment.
  • Movement required between locations/building/district.
  • Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting up to 30 pounds, occasional lifting up to 40 pounds.
  • May require travel with students on field trips.
EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION
  • Substitute Teacher: Minimum 30 college hours, Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from accredited institution; official transcript required.
  • Minimum high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Some college preferred; prior experience preferred.
  • Substitute Paraprofessional: Minimum high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Some college preferred; prior experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Effective communication (verbal and written) and emotional control under stress.
  • Subject area knowledge and general curriculum instruction knowledge; child growth and development understanding.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions and establish effective relationships with staff, parents and students.
  • Effective classroom management and/or office strategies.
