Position: North Central Library - Volunteer

This is an unpaid volunteer position at the Anoka County Library. Volunteers assist with keeping the library organized, help patrons with technology, and mentor youth. The minimum commitment is three months, typically one to two hours per week.

Volunteer Roles
  • Reading Mentor (ages 15 and older)
  • Technology Assistant (ages 15 and older)
  • Materials Assistant (ages 12 and older)
  • Summer VolunTEEN (ages 12‑18)
Reading Mentor Duties
  • Meet with a student each week during after‑school hours for the Reading Bridge season (fall, winter, summer).
  • Lead a 45‑minute session that includes reading aloud, having the student read aloud, playing literacy games, selecting books for home reading, and setting weekly goals.
  • Complete an online training module and a brief in‑person orientation before starting the mentorship.
Technology Assistant Duties
  • Assist patrons with printing, copying, and scanning documents to email.
  • Help patrons browse the internet and navigate websites and online forms.
  • Guide patrons in using digital tools such as setting up email accounts, searching the library catalog, placing holds, and downloading eBooks.
Materials Assistant Duties
  • Maintain assigned areas of the collection, keeping items neat and orderly.
  • Place materials back on shelves in proper alphabetic or numeric order.
  • Stamp, sort, count, clean (dust, wipe) books and other materials.
  • Retrieve items from shelves to fulfill hold requests.
Summer VolunTEEN Duties
  • Inform patrons about the summer reading program and help them download the Beanstack Tracker app.
  • Assist library staff in preparing, setting up, and cleaning up for programs and events.
  • Research and suggest ideas for crafts, escape rooms, STEM events, and other programs.
  • Help keep materials shelved, orderly, and tidy, and pull items to fill hold requests.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
Administrative Requirements
  • Applicants must complete an informed‑consent form allowing the County to conduct a background check; failure to sign will result in disqualification.
