Employee Qualifications
  • Connecticut certification as an Intermediate Administrator.
  • Master’s Degree and/or Connecticut certification in Special Education or a related service area (e.g., School Psychology, Social Work, or Speech and Language Pathology).
  • Minimum of three years’ experience teaching students with disabilities, working in a related service area as noted above, and/or serving as an administrator of special education programming at the elementary or secondary levels.
  • Extensive knowledge of psycho‑educational assessment, the Planning and Placement Team process, and special education programs and procedures.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications deemed appropriate by the Superintendent.

Job Goal

To supervise, evaluate, and support special education teachers, school psychologists, and social workers as assigned.

Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Oversee and supervise all functions related to the elementary special education programming at the assigned elementary schools.
  • Collaborate with various members of the school community to identify needs and services related to Extended School Year (ESY) programming.
  • Oversee and coordinate the hiring of special education and related services staff at the assigned elementary schools, including making a recommendation for hire for certified positions to the Director of PPS.
  • Complete annual evaluations for school psychologists, social workers, and/or special education teachers in the elementary schools as assigned by the Director of PPS or the Assistant Superintendent of Schools.
  • Serve as liaison and PPT chairperson for students with disabilities in grades PreK‑8 who have been placed in an out‑of‑district special education program, as assigned.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning to develop a TAG identification process, coordinate services, and evaluate elementary TAG teachers.
  • Assist the Director in developing the annual budget for the PPS Department.
  • Perform any other job or duty assigned by the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent or Director of PPS.
