Title:
Paraprofessional

Position Summary:
Paraprofessionals in the Hamden Public School District assist teachers and/or other professional educators in the delivery of instructional and related services to students, and/or provide operational supports to schools. The paraprofessional works under the direction of a certified teacher and/or other certified professional, inclusive of school and district-level administrators.

Qualifications:
  • Must hold a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must hold a Bachelors's Degree, Associates' Degree or achieve a passing score on the Para Pro test from the State of Connecticut
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of computers, copiers, and related technology to support student learning (i.e. Microsoft Office products when necessary)
  • Must have effective communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student populations
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
  • Reports To:
    Certified Educator, including school and district-level administrators

    Performance Responsibilities:
  • Works with individual students, small groups of students, or the entire class to support student comprehension of concepts introduced by certified staff
  • Works in collaboration with certified staff to implement academic and/or non-academic learning activities
  • Records grades, monitors, collects, and corrects students work, including objective-type tests and quizzes
  • Provides instructional supports and guidance for well-established school routines for all substitute teachers that may be placed in the classroom
  • Assists with the supervision of students in a variety of school settings (i.e. lunch periods, play periods, assemblies, hallways, recess, bus loading areas and field trips) and during other school-sponsored activities transpiring during normal school hours
  • Attends all professional development sessions (as directed by school and/or district-level administrators) for the purpose of acquiring knowledge and skills that are pertinent to their job performance
  • Supports the implementation of student behavioral plans
  • Distributes, organizes and collects instructional materials
  • Communicates with supervising instructional and administrative staff for the purpose of assisting in evaluating students' progress and/or implementing IEP objectives
  • Keeps bulletin board and other classroom learning displays up-to-date
  • Operates equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes
  • Assists medically fragile or physically disabled students for the purpose of maintaining students' personal hygiene, inclusive of toileting, diapering, and lifting when required
  • Provides classroom coverage for teachers attending PPTs, 504 meetings, teacher evaluation conferences, SRBI meetings, other meetings, and professional development opportunities
  • Makes copies of instructional or informational materials for classroom teachers
  • Coordinates lunch counts with the food service provider
  • Provides secretarial coverage in the school's main office (i.e. assists with answering telephones, providing information and assistance to callers, making copies, and processing tardy students)
  • Assists in distributing incoming mail appropriately
  • Collaborates with appropriate school personnel to organize Kindergarten Orientations
  • Maintains confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others
  • Assists the Media Specialist(s) with maintenance of the library circulation system
  • Re-shelves library books
  • Carries out other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the classroom teacher and/or school or district-level administrator
  • Evaluation:
    Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the classroom teacher to whom the paraprofessional reports, or the appropriate school or district-level administrator
