POSITION:

Assistant Principal, Capital Preparatory Magnet School (Grades PK3-12)

REPORTS TO:

Principal of the School and/or the Superintendent of Schools and CEO’s designee

POSITION SUMMARY:

Hartford Public Schools seeks an assistant principal with a passion for educating children, a commitment to closing achievement gaps, and the ability to maximize learning for all students. We invite applications from innovative professionals dedicated to urban education who understand the academic, social, and emotional needs of students at every stage of development.

The assistant principal will design, organize, and model effective instruction, communication, discipline, and intervention while promoting a positive school culture and climate, and will assume full responsibility for the administration, supervision, and operation of the program, staff, and building in the principal's absence. Ideal candidates bring a proven track record in instructional leadership centered on student-centered learning, along with experience fostering a positive school culture and engaging families and community partners to promote equity and excellence.

The assistant principal is more than a building administrator. This leader serves as a strategic thought partner to the principal, helping shape the school's vision, strengthen instructional excellence, develop educators, and leave a lasting legacy for students, families, and the broader Capital Preparatory Magnet School community.

We are looking for a leader who brings the following strengths and expertise:

  • Exceptional Instructional Leadership (PreK–12): Demonstrated ability to coach teachers, analyze student achievement data, lead professional learning communities, and improve instructional practice across multiple grade spans. The ideal candidate understands that excellence in a PreK–12 school requires building coherence from early childhood through graduation.
  • Systems Thinker with Strong Operational Capacity: Ability to lead complex school systems while balancing instruction, culture, operations, compliance, and continuous improvement. We are looking for someone who is proactive, organized, solutions-oriented, and thrives in a fast-paced environment.
  • Relationship-Centered Leader: A collaborative leader who builds trust with students, families, and staff while maintaining high expectations. The ideal candidate believes that strong relationships and accountability are equally important and is committed to developing both people and systems.

Capital Prep has maintained a 100% college acceptance rate for every graduating senior, every year — a distinction unmatched by traditional public schools in Connecticut and a reflection of our unwavering belief that every student deserves access to higher education and limitless opportunities. As one of Connecticut's few PreK–12 college preparatory magnet schools, we intentionally cultivate students from their earliest years through graduation, creating one seamless educational journey and a unified vision for academic excellence, character development, leadership, and college readiness.

Social justice is the foundation of who we are and a mission that matters: students engage in authentic civic leadership, advocacy, and service learning that empowers them to become thoughtful changemakers in their communities and beyond.
