The Registered Nurse (RN) provides patient-centered care within Yale New Haven Health System, adhering to professional nursing standards and ethical guidelines. The RN performs assessments, develops care plans, implements interventions, and collaborates with healthcare teams to ensure quality outcomes, especially in specialized units such as Ortho/Spine and Neuro ICUs. This role emphasizes leadership, cultural competence, evidence-based practice, and continuous professional development.

Responsibilities

The RN provides care that:

  • Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with the patient and family, incorporating cultural and diversity considerations.
  • Communicates and works collaboratively with the patient, family, and health care team members.
  • Respects the patient's values, preferences, expressed needs, and knowledge of the healthcare situation in holistic data collection, in formulating health care outcomes and in the evaluation process.
  • STANDARDS OF PRACTICER: Practice is guided by the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice. The standards describe a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by utilizing the nursing process components of assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN collects data, analyzes it to determine diagnoses or issues, identifies expected outcomes, develops individualized plans, implements plans, coordinates care delivery and transitions, employs health teaching and promotion strategies, and evaluates progress toward outcomes.
  • STANDARDS OF PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE: The ANA Standards of Professional Performance describe a competent level of behavior in the professional role, including activities related to ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice and research, quality of practice, professional practice evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN is expected to engage in professional role activities appropriate to their education and position, practicing ethically, culturally congruently, communicating effectively, collaborating with stakeholders, leading within the professional setting, seeking knowledge, integrating evidence, contributing to quality nursing practice, evaluating practices, utilizing resources responsibly, and practicing in an environment that is safe and healthy.
  • Qualifications

    Education

    Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred. Proficient in use of computer software to include electronic patient records. Must have ability to use Internet for literature searches regarding patient care.

    Licensure

    Valid State of Connecticut Registered Nurse license.

    Special Skills

    BLS required.

    Additional Information

    Ortho/Spine Unit: Treats patients before and after surgery for total joint, hip, knees, shoulder, spinal fusion, fragility hip fractures, and joint infections.
    Neuroscience & Epilepsy/Neuro Stepdown: General neuro, neuro surg, stroke and epilepsy; stepdown area provides higher level of care.
    Neuro ICU: Neuroscience ICU cares for patients who have suffered stroke, traumatic brain and spinal injury, aneurysm, autoimmune and movement disorders (including Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and Guillain‑Barre syndrome) and neurological disorders. Patients are closely monitored for subtle neurological changes.
