Commodity Manager – Indirect Procurement (Temporary)

About the Role
  • At Stelco, the Commodity Manager – Indirect Procurement, is responsible for the overall management and performance of a specific set of commodities and vendors to support Operations in a 24/7/365 environment.
  • Commodities may include various types of equipment, supplies, and services, professional, maintenance (including heavy industrial), technical, and emergency services, consumables, capital and miscellaneous expenditures, repair and operations goods and services.
  • The Commodity Manager collaborates with internal customers, suppliers, and businesses to perform strategic sourcing, including vendor evaluation and selection, RFXs, basic/advanced quantitative and qualitative analysis, and vendor negotiations.
  • This position reports to the Director of Indirect Procurement and has no direct reports.
Responsibilities
  • Meet and exceed assigned performance goals, including cost savings, working capital, and efficiency improvements in order to support overall Indirect Procurement department goals.
  • Perform strategic sourcing activities, including but not limited to, data collection and review, market and vendor evaluation, contract negotiation and execution, monitoring compliance and performance.
  • Issue RFXs as required; conduct supplier proposal analysis, negotiations, awards, and implementations.
  • Considerable interaction with internal customers to understand requirements and identify and implement solutions and cost savings initiatives.
  • Monitor and manage supplier performance and keep Operations abreast of potential supply chain risks.
  • Manage interactions between internal groups (Operations, Transportation, Materials Management, etc.) for efficient and timely ordering and delivery of goods and services.
  • Support teams in conducting negotiations with financial/bid analysis.
  • Attend conferences, forums, demonstrations and exhibits to maintain professional competence and to keep current with technical literature.
  • Constantly source and evaluate new innovative suppliers’ abilities and capacities within assigned commodities.
  • Occasional travel domestically and internationally, alone or in a group, will be required.
Qualifications And Experience
  • Degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, or related fields.
  • Preferably MBA or equivalent.
  • NISCL-CSCL/CSCMP designation or equivalent is a strong asset.
  • 10 years of experience in a procurement function, at least 5 years in strategic roles (sourcing, commodities, vendor management).
  • A valid Ontario Driver’s License and vehicle.
Job Skills and Knowledge
  • Working knowledge of commodity management is a must.
  • Proficient knowledge of contract negotiations.
  • Ability to develop formal reports and presentations for senior management.
  • In-depth experience with the procurement of assigned specific commodities is preferable and/or ability to fast acquire such knowledge for unfamiliar commodities.
  • Development and implementation of sourcing strategies, procurement, and process flow throughout the organization.
  • Stay current on market trends and evolving technology to proactively identify supply threats and opportunities to ensure continuity of supply and maximize emerging opportunities.
  • Ability to identify potential supply chain risk and implement risk mitigation strategies.
  • Working knowledge of financial analysis, tools, terms and indices relevant to assigned commodities, e.g. NPV, lease vs buy, working capital improvement, payback, market pricing volatility.
  • An understanding of future curve pricing and hedging is a bonus.
