As the pioneer of problem-based learning, McMaster has a rich history of educational innovation. With over 37,000 students, more than 8,000 continuing faculty and staff, and a vibrant research enterprise, McMaster is consistently ranked among Canada’s top research universities and recognized as a Hamilton‑Niagara Top Employer and one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers.

Guided by values of trust, respect, accountability, integrity, and teamwork, Financial Affairs at McMaster partners closely with faculties, departments and central services to provide strategic financial leadership and stewardship in support of McMaster University’s academic, research, and operational mission. The unit ensures strong governance, regulatory compliance, and high‑quality financial services while supporting informed decision‑making and long‑term financial sustainability across the University.

It is within this context that McMaster University is seeking an exceptional financial leader to serve as its next Controller
, a pivotal senior leadership role that offers a rare opportunity to shape financial strategy, governance, and culture.

Reporting to the Associate Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer, the Controller provides expert advice to executive leadership and the Board of Governors, exercises strong stewardship and risk accountability, and contributes to institutional decision‑making focused on long‑term financial sustainability and resilience. The role oversees core financial operations, including accounting, reporting, budgeting, and transactional services supporting approximately $1.6 billion in annual revenue and $4.2 billion in assets.

Within a rapidly evolving post-secondary financial and operating environment, the role requires a renewed focus on strengthening organizational culture, supporting leadership and talent development, and driving operational excellence, innovation, and a culture of continuous process improvement.

The ideal candidate has senior‑level financial leadership experience and deep knowledge of public‑sector or higher‑education accounting and governance. They possess a Certified Professional Accounting designation (CA) and a demonstrated ability to serve as a trusted advisor to University leadership and governing bodies – translating complex financial issues into clear, decision‑relevant insights focused on risk management, long‑term sustainability, and institutional resilience. The successful candidate balances fiscal stewardship with mission-driven priorities while fostering alignment, accountability and collaboration across a large, decentralized and unionized institution.

An effective communicator and people‑centred leader, they cultivate respectful relationships across the University, build and sustain high-performing teams, and champion equity, diversity, and inclusion as core organizational priorities.

The University seeks qualified candidates who share their commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, who will contribute to the diversification of ideas and perspectives, and especially welcomes applications from Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit) peoples, members of racialized communities, persons with disabilities, women, and persons who identify as 2
