Job DescriptionNuclear at McMaster is a unique combination of commercial operations, research, and teaching facilities. The facility consists of the McMaster Nuclear Reactor along with support facilities including Centre for Advanced Nuclear Systems, Small Angle Neutron Scattering, Accelerator, McMaster University Cyclotron Facility, High Level Laboratory Facility, McMaster Positron facility and 9 other cost centers within Nuclear at McMaster.
Nuclear at McMaster facilitates and enables dozens of investigators from approximately 25 Universities to conduct foundational and translational research by providing operational, analytical, technical, regulatory and project management staffing for faculty-led research initiatives, and training and support services for researchers who wish to work independently.
Health Physics is responsible for implementing the University's radiation protection program, overseeing common radioisotope laboratories and storage facilities, and providing radiation safety services to support research, operations, and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements. Through these activities, Health Physics helps ensure the safe use of radioactive materials while maintaining adherence to government regulations and industry standards.
Job SummaryProvide specialized support to the University’s radiation safety program.
Accountabilities- Collect, process and analyze data related to the radiation safety program and assist in the preparation of reports.
- Review proposed work, perform radiological safety assessments of proposed work and prepare work plans and permits for authorized radiological work.
- Plan, conduct, report and assess of radiological surveys and measurements.
- Operate, calibrate and maintain radiological survey and measuring equipment.
- Participate in emergency preparedness and response roles of the Health Physics Department, including the response to declared radiological incidents and nuclear emergencies.
- Attend meetings and provide information to employees, students and with agencies outside of the University such as regulatory agencies.
- Assist in the development and delivery of radiation safety training.
- Assist in the development of policies and procedures, new tools and techniques to facilitate the work of the Department.

The incumbent must be a declared Nuclear Energy Worker as defined in the Nuclear Safety and Control Act of Canada.
