SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Reports to Supervisors and/or Lead hand within the Transportation Operations & Maintenance Division of the Roadway Maintenance Section.

Performs strenuous labouring duties daily such as but not limited to: climbing, lifting, balancing, kneeling, stooping, walking, shoveling, set up/tear down of signage, load/unload of tools/equipment and handling of materials to maintain/repair roadside drainage, hard surface and loose top maintenance and winter control programs.

Operates, performs basic inspections and maintains various pieces of equipment such as but not limited to: pick-up trucks, mechanical equipment and associated implements, tractors, sidewalk equipment, loaders, etc., as related to, roadside drainage, hard surface, loose top maintenance, and winter control for road maintenance programs such as but not limited to:

• Road repair – pothole patching, base repair, patch, grade and roll

• Shoulder maintenance

• Litter/debris clean up

• Weed control

• Culvert maintenance

• Sidewalk maintenance

• Tree response – brush/tree clean up

• Drainage Inspections

• Alley maintenance

• Flagging

• Salt/Sand application

• Damage repairs due to plowing/winter control

• Bus stop snow clearing

• Path/sidewalk snow clearing

Operates hand tools and power tools with competence for road maintenance programs. Such tools would include, but not limited to; shovels, picks, various grass cutting equipment, compressor, jackhammer, pumps, hot box components, concrete/chain/chop saws, small power tools, compactor, drills, leaf blowers, snow blowers.

Performs duties in various locations of the Transportation Operations & Maintenance Division. Duties vary dependent on location, rural, urban setting and weather. They may include duties such as but not limited to filling potholes, shoveling, strenuous manual labour, traffic control (flagging), operation of various power tools, concrete labour repairs, ground restoration duties, litter/bulk pick up, working around water.

Performs basic inspections and minor preventative maintenance on tools and equipment. Works as part of a team within a crew setting, some duties as well require an independent ability.
Completes documentation such as but not limited to: daily activity logs, equipment sheets and various reports, as required.

Interacts with the general public, representatives of external agencies, supervisors and co-workers in a courteous and

respectful manner, while adhering to the City of Hamilton’s Corporate Culture.

Works with competent knowledge in accordance with the provisions of applicable Health and Safety legislation and all City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.

Performs other duties as assigned which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Demonstrated roads maintenance experience and training related to duties and programs listed above normally acquired by a combination of education and relevant work experience. OSSD or equivalent would be considered an asset.

2. Must be able to perform labouring duties, such as but not limited to shoveling, raking, loading/unloading tools and/or equipment, clean and shovel snow, spread sand/salt by hand in a continuous capacity for a substantial portion of the day.

3. Previous experience, training and competent ability to operate tools and equipment associated with road and sidewalk maintenance in a safe manner.

4. Must be available and able to work shifts and on callouts, including weekends, nights etc., with crew as well as independently with minimal supervision.

5. Must be able to understand and follow detailed procedures, instructions and take direction. Ability to accurately complete various logs, documents, inspection forms and other administrative information. Able to use fractions and decimal arithmetic and simple formulas, diagrams and drawings.

6. Knowledge of relevant legislation such as Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations including
W.H.M.I.S. legislation, Book 7 Traffic Control and Minimum Maintenance Standards.

7. Must be able to lift a minimum of 30 kgs., with an occasional requirement to lift up to 45 kgs.

8. Must have solid interpersonal skills required to assist and respond with all scenarios and situations in regard to the general public, co-workers, supervisors and any other stakeholders etc.

9. Must possess a valid Class "G" Licence and a Driver’s abstract clear of any demerit points and pending infractions and/or a record found to be satisfactory to the City of Hamilton.

10. Working knowledge and computer skills utilizing Web search engines, GPS tools, and windows functions an asset.

11. Must be able to work in adverse road and weather conditions.

THIS POSITION REQUIRES A VALID CLASS "G" DRIVER'S LICENCE AND PROOF THEREOF IS REQUIRED AFTER HIRE.
