HCS is currently undergoing a period of significant expansion, increasing capacity by 66% over the next several years. Moving from 3,900 to 6,000 bed spaces across 15 buildings, this growth will diversify the housing portfolio beyond its traditional focus on first-year undergraduate students to include upper‑year, graduate, and family housing, as well as a constantly evolving internal and external client base.
The department operates with an annual pre‑expansion budget of approximately $31 million and employs over 100 full‑time and 250 part‑time staff. HCS reports directly to both the Divisions of Student Affairs and Operations & Finance.
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 11 am – 7:30 pm.
Grade 12 diploma or equivalent. 3 years of related experience.
Working in collaboration with a diverse team of trades professionals, the Facilities Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for maintenance, troubleshooting, alteration, repair, and small renovation construction of mechanical building equipment and components, as well as preventative maintenance and servicing to various building systems across all University campuses and buildings. The role ensures all work is completed safely and in compliance with applicable codes, legislative requirements and University standards.
Accountabilities- Perform duties of a Facilities Maintenance Mechanic, in compliance with current codes and regulations as required and the OHSA.
- Perform technical trade for maintenance, repair and small renovations.
- Diagnose and resolve problems related to building mechanical systems and provide technical advice for repairs.
- Adjust and align machinery and equipment according to manufacturer specifications alongside a licensed millwright.
- Perform preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment including cleaning, lubrications, inspection, repair and adjustment and assist with creating these schedules.
- Assist with fabrication of metals and metal components such as aluminum, steel and stainless steel, using a variety of techniques and equipment including but not limited to welding, bending, tapping and cutting.
- Rig, hoist and move heavy loads in partnership with a licensed millwright.
- Operate and maintain variety of different types of machines, such as lathes, drill presses, punch presses, shapers, grinders and other machine shop equipment, to fabricate and assemble parts to make or repair mechanisms, tools or machines.
- Assist in repairing or installing snow removal and grounds maintenance equipment and machinery.
- Performs maintenance including cleaning and filter replacement on fan coil units, change filters and filter media in fans or ducting.
- Clean and maintain air diffusers.
- Inspect and document building components for compliance to operating parameters including but not limited to fire extinguishers, drinking fountains, eye washes and drench showers.
- Review and interpret construction documents including blueprints, wiring diagrams and manufacturer’s installation manuals, plans, drawings and specifications to determine work requirements and the sequence of repairs or installations. Utilize technical documents to complete assigned projects and update drawings to reflect any changes from work performed.
