• The candidate will be responsible for performing duties across various seasonal roadway maintenance programs, including road surface repairs using hot and cold asphalt materials, road shoulder maintenance, general ground litter and right-of-way debris removal, roadside mowing and mechanical weed trimming, ditching and culvert maintenance, sidewalk maintenance, vegetation management, and general aesthetic maintenance.
• The candidate will be responsible for operating and carrying out basic inspections and maintenance on various equipment, such as crew cabs, mechanical equipment and associated implements, backhoes, tractors, loaders, dump trucks, sweepers, asphalt rollers, flushers, and crew cabs with crane and/or electric tailgate attachments.
• The candidate must conduct pre- and post-trip inspections on all equipment assigned to and authorized for operation, including dump trucks, crew cabs, and similar equipment.
• The candidate will be responsible for competently operating hand tools and power tools used in summer maintenance programs, including but not limited to shovels, picks, various grass cutting equipment, compressors, jackhammers, pumps, hot box components, concrete/chain/chop saws, grinders, small power tools, compactors, drills, leaf blowers, trash pumps, compaction equipment, and a variety of hand tools.
• The candidate will be responsible for performing roadway maintenance duties at different locations, including rural and urban work sites with varying conditions. The role requires prolonged periods of walking, bending, lifting, twisting, shovelling, kneeling, and standing. The candidate will also fill potholes, perform manual labour, provide traffic control through flagging, operate power tools, vehicles, and grass-cutting equipment, drive specialized equipment, complete concrete repairs, restore ground areas, collect litter and bulk materials, and work around water.
• The candidate must perform basic inspections and minor preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
• The candidate must work effectively as part of a team and independently, demonstrate motivation as a self-starter, and work with minimal supervision.
• The candidate must complete required documentation, including daily activity logs, inspection sheets (i.e. pre-trip), and various reports.
• The candidate must interact with the general public, external agencies, supervisors, and co-workers in a courteous and respectful manner that upholds the City of Hamilton’s Corporate values.
• The candidate will be responsible for working in accordance with applicable Health and Safety legislation and all City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety, using competent knowledge.
• The candidate must perform other duties as assigned that are directly related to the major responsibilities of the position.
• The candidate must assume the winter operator responsibilities during the seasonal transfer and operate and maintain various equipment and vehicles associated with the winter control program, such as industrial-size snow blowers, general-size snow blowers, single and tandem axle sander/plow trucks, backhoes, tractors, and front-end loaders.
