Substitute Aide Position Purpose

Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, to assist certified professional staff with students in the classroom to meet instructional goals and objectives, and to free certified professional employees from non‑professional duties such as proctoring study halls to enable them to make a contribution to other aspects of the educational program, such as curriculum development.

Essential Job Functions
  • Assist the teacher in working with individual students and small groups of students or to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Assist the teacher in data collection for evaluating achievement as specified in the Instructional Guide of the Individualized Education Plan under the direction of the teacher.
  • Under the direction of the teacher, to assist in devising special strategies for reinforcement of materials, skills and classroom management.
  • Under Teacher’s direction assist child in addressing IEP goals and objectives.
  • Under Teacher’s direction facilitate child’s classroom integration and participation in group activities.
  • Maintain daily anecdotal notes of behavior.
  • Record student task performance and progress daily.
  • Implement behavior management plan as directed.
  • Guide independent study, enrichment work and remedial work set up as assigned by the teacher.
  • Assist in checking notebooks, correcting papers and monitoring testing and make up work as assigned by the teacher.
  • Assist the teacher with such large group activities as drill work, reading aloud, etc.
  • Serve as a source of information and assist the substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Alert the classroom teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  • Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as expected of teachers.
  • Will accompany and assist the monitoring of students in situations other than those existing in the classroom environment (eg: bus duty, lunch room duty, specials) and other related duties as assigned by the classroom teacher.
  • Additional Duties
    • Assist guidance, pupil services staff or building administration, as needed.
    • Perform any other related duties as assigned.

    Skills and Abilities
    • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
    • Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
    • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
    • Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
    • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
    • Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
    Qualifications Profile
    • Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
    • High School diploma or equivalent and/or 60 college credits
    • Substitute Certificate preferred
    • Prior experience working with special needs children desirable.
