Job DescriptionThe Athletic Director provides visionary leadership, strategic planning, and administrative management for a comprehensive 9-12 interscholastic athletic program. The Athletic Director is responsible for ensuring that all programs align with the district’s mission, promote sportsmanship and healthy competition, and comply with all Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) and Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) regulations.
Reports To: High School Principal
Duration: 12-month position requiring work beyond the standard school day, including weekends and vacations.
Leadership & Program Management- Develops and implements a sound philosophy of athletic education and a student-centered program aligned with district goals.
- Serves as the district liaison to the MIAA and Cape Ann League to ensure all programs and staff adhere to state rules and coaching requirements.
- Acts as the chief spokesperson for the athletic program, representing the school at public appearances and community gatherings.
- Develops and maintains an Athletic Handbook for coaches, students, and parents/caregivers.
- Schedules all interscholastic athletic contests, practices, and athletic facility uses.
- Works with the Facilities Director and High School Principal to coordinate the maintenance and upkeep of athletic fields and gymnasium.
- Arranges transportation for all athletic teams.
- Organizes and oversees the supervision of home games, ensuring coverage and adherence to codes of conduct.
- Prepares and administers the annual operating budget, including long- and short-term plans, in consultation with the High School Principal and the Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Administration.
- Oversees financial operations, including gate receipts, user fee collection, purchasing, and payroll processing for officials.
- Manages the recruitment, hiring, orientation, evaluation, and professional development of the coaching staff.
- Maintains an accurate inventory and plans for the maintenance of all athletic equipment and uniforms.
- Verifies and monitors student-athlete eligibility according to MIAA and local district requirements, including academic standing and physical medical exams.
- Maintains records of athletic contest results, award winners, and athletic scholarships.
- Collaborates with the Athletic Trainer and School Nurse to ensure proper injury protocols and emergency action plans are in place.
- Bachelor’s degree required;
Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, Athletic Administration, or Sports Management preferred. - Valid Massachusetts Educator License as a Supervisor/Director or Principal/Assistant Principal preferred; NIAAA CAA preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years of coaching experience and/or 3 years of leadership/administrative experience is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated success in the development, evaluation, and implementation of secondary school athletic programs.
- CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
- Effective interpersonal and leadership skills; experience facilitating communication between divergent groups and in group decision making.
- Effective administrative and management skills, including the effective utilization of computers, technology, and information management tools.
- Effective communication skills (speaking and writing skills).
- Effective budget planning and financial accounting skills.
Environment:
Work is performed in office, gymnasium, and outdoor settings, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
Demands:
Ability to walk/stand for extended periods, move throughout buildings, and lift up to 25–60 pounds.
