Job Description Position Summary

The Alcohol & Substance Abuse Specialist, also known as the Trainee Employee Assistance Program (TEAP) Specialist , plays an important role in supporting the health, wellness, and career readiness of Job Corps students.

The TEAP Specialist provides substance use education, prevention, assessment, and intervention services while helping students develop healthy decision-making, coping, and relapse-prevention skills. This position works collaboratively with other Job Corps wellness and student-support professionals to promote a safe, supportive, and substance-free environment.

Key Responsibilities
Substance Abuse Education & Prevention
  • Provide structured group instruction on substance abuse awareness, prevention, and healthy decision-making.
  • Incorporate substance abuse education into the Career Success Standards curriculum.
  • Help students understand how substance use can affect employability, workplace safety, and long-term career success.
  • Develop and maintain lesson plans, educational materials, workshops, and other resources appropriate for diverse student needs.
  • Conduct orientation sessions for new students regarding Job Corps' substance-use policies and available wellness resources.
Student Counseling & Support
  • Conduct individual assessments to identify students who may be at risk for substance use issues.
  • Provide short-term counseling and motivational interviewing.
  • Refer students to appropriate community resources and outside services when necessary.
  • Assist students with developing healthy coping strategies, relapse-prevention skills, and personal responsibility.
  • Work collaboratively with the Center Mental Health Consultant, Wellness staff, Residential Advisors, and other members of the student-support team.
Program Administration & Compliance
  • Ensure TEAP services comply with the Job Corps Policy and Requirements Handbook (PRH).
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation regarding student participation, progress, assessments, and referrals.
  • Participate in case-management meetings and contribute to individualized student-success planning.
  • Provide training and guidance to staff regarding recognizing and appropriately responding to substance-use concerns.
Requirements

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Certification or licensure in substance abuse counseling (CADC, LADC, or equivalent) is REQUIRED.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in substance abuse prevention, counseling, or education.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, interpersonal, and motivational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary, mission-driven environment.
