This position plans and executes the daily news broadcasts that air on NJ PBS, including a weeknight evening newscast, a weekday news interview talk show, and any special broadcast coverage of planned events or breaking news.

This position also oversees the planning and editorial direction of content on digital platforms and live streaming channels. The Senior Producer works closely with the News Director to balance breaking news with planned coverage.

NOTE: Hiring is contingent upon the execution of the contract between the State of New Jersey and Montclair State University.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Time scripts and segments to appropriate length depending on platform.
  • Coordinate with the assignment desk, reporters, anchors, and technical staff to ensure all elements are ready before they are posted or aired.
  • Write and edit scripts and promos for daily programs.
  • Supervise production crew during broadcast newscasts, calling shots and managing transitions in the control room.
  • Assist in the development of future NJ PBS live streaming channels.
  • Track story progress and deadlines, alerting producers and editors when deadlines are at risk.
  • Adapt coverage plans in response to breaking news, re-stacking rundowns, and coordinating live coverage as needed.
  • Review reporter packages and edited content before it is posted or aired, checking for accuracy, fairness, and technical quality.
  • Work with the Producer, Digital Content, to oversee the planning and execution of content on all digital platforms.
  • Supervise the Producer, Digital Content; the V-Mix Operator; and the Graphics Producer and Editor.
  • Adhere to NJ PBS editorial standards and public media ethics guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.
QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in journalism, communications, broadcasting or a related field.
  • Minimum of four years of experience in broadcast news production, including rundown management, live newscast, and special event program execution.
  • Demonstrated experience in digital news content production on multiple platforms.
  • Proficiency with newsroom management systems and broadcast production tools.
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure in a fast-paced live news environment.
  • Strong background in journalism.
PREFERRED:
