The Axel Group is currently seeking a Civil Engineer to join our client’s growing Land Development team in Parsippany, NJ. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer looking to gain hands‑on experience with site development, geotechnical, and environmental engineering projects while working alongside experienced engineers and project managers.

This role is ideal for a recent graduate or engineer with up to five years of experience who is looking to build a long‑term career in civil engineering. You'll have the opportunity to participate in every phase of a project – from site investigations and engineering design through construction observation, permitting, and client interaction – while receiving mentorship from experienced industry professionals.
Job Duties and Responsibilities- Perform field inspections to monitor construction progress and verify compliance with project plans, specifications, and applicable standards.
- Assist with the design and preparation of site development, grading, drainage, utility, and other civil engineering plans.
- Perform engineering calculations and technical analyses to support project design.
- Prepare technical reports, field documentation, and engineering recommendations.
- Conduct soil classifications, laboratory testing, and other geotechnical evaluations.
- Assist with concrete, rebar, foundation, utility, earthwork, and sitework inspections.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, contractors, and clients throughout all phases of project execution.
- Support project scheduling, budgeting, permitting, and overall project coordination.
- Utilize engineering software including AutoCAD Civil 3D and Microsoft Office to prepare project deliverables.
- Participate in environmental investigations, groundwater and soil sampling, and site assessments as required.
- Assist with construction observation, testing, and quality assurance activities on active job sites.
- Mentor interns and junior staff as experience develops while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
- Travel to project sites throughout the region as needed.
- Ability to read and interpret civil, grading, utility, structural, architectural, and foundation plans and specifications.
- Understanding of site development, construction practices, and engineering principles.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Comfortable balancing office‑based engineering work with regular field assignments.
- Proficiency or familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Microsoft Office, and engineering software such as GSLOPE, Key Wall, Nitro Pro, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations involving geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and related mathematical concepts.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and navigate active construction sites safely.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required.
- 1‑5 years of experience in Site Civil, Land Development, Geotechnical, or Environmental Engineering.
- Internship or prior construction experience is preferred.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred or ability to obtain within six months.
- OSHA 40‑Hour HAZWOPER certification is a plus.
- ACI, NICET, NJ DCA Special Inspector, and/or Nuclear Density Gauge certifications are a plus.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work safely on active construction sites as needed.
