Systems Engineer
New Jersey's Research and Education Network (Edge) provides connectivity and transport services, access to Internet2, and support for various on-network applications and services to more than 50 connected members throughout the State of New Jersey and the region.
Job Focus:Under the direction of the Principal Network Architect, the Field Engineer (Level
1) is responsible for managing the daily operational activities of the Edge network and systems. Responsibilities include all facets of hands‑on installation, moves, adds, and repairs of network and server‑related hardware and other components. The Field Engineer assists the Network Engineering Team with routine installation and maintenance of the Edge network assets and supports network projects undertaken at the direction of the Principal Architect and the Senior Network Engineer.
In addition to maintaining the physical network assets, the Field Engineer is responsible for updating and maintaining all network documentation in accordance with the field operations practice standards established by the Network Engineering Team.
- Primary responsibility is to support day‑to‑day network and system operations at the direction of the Senior Network Engineers
- Travel to all Edge Co‑location facilities as necessary to fulfill network maintenance and operations responsibilities
- Management/tracking of all network assets and inventory
- Perform installation, moves, adds, and repairs of network components, UPS and server related hardware
- Assists the network engineering team in resolving all network and systems‑related problems
- Assists the network engineering team in the installation of network and associated production systems
- Installation of hardware and cabling in support of network installations, moves, adds, and changes
- Cable inspection/cleaning
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced, dynamic, and rapidly changing environment.
- Perform required maintenance on all network hardware and software platforms
Duties and Responsibilities:
- This role is designated as a hybrid position, and the incumbent is expected to function autonomously, manage time efficiently, and in so doing achieve high levels of productivity. These are essential capabilities and will be an area of evaluation on personnel reviews and performance plans.
- Document and communicate assigned work and progress to the immediate project team, management, and member stakeholder personnel.
- Communicate problems and/or issues in a timely manner and in accord with established protocols for incident management and problem resolution.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Edge staff, vendor/industry partners, and the Edge membership.
- Requires excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to provide nontechnical descriptions of technology issues for nontechnical managers, directors and other stakeholders.
- Provide customer support with high levels of professional conduct.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as directed by the Principal Network Architect and senior management of the Edge organization.
- Travel to Edge facilities (Points of Presence (POPs) and member locations in support of Edge operational activities is required.
- Additional duties and responsibilities may be assigned at the discretion of the Principal Network Architect.
Required:
- Must have use of an automobile and a valid license to drive that is in good standing.
- Must be located in central NJ.
- Must be within approximately 1 hour of Newark, NJ, and within approximately 1 hour of Philadelphia, PA.
- Must have the ability to work outside regular business hours, and/or on‑call work.
- Must be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, bend and stoop to perform equipment maintenance at member location and Co‑location facilities when necessary
- Hardware configuration and server assembly for custom configurations
- Familiarity with Fiber Scopes, Power Meters and OTDR’s
- Ability to provision routers and firewalls
- Related Cisco certifications, including Cisco Certified Network Associate, CCNA and/or Linux administration skills
- Knowledge of Co‑Location facilities
- Associate degree in the IT field or equivalent work experience
Annual salary range of $90,000 to $100,000 based on experience and qualifications to be paid bi‑weekly, paid time off (PTO) as determined by the company policy, ten (10) paid holidays per year, plus medical, dental, vision, short‑term and long‑term disability, life insurance, as well as a matching contribution under a retirement plan.
