Accountabilities

The Facilities Department provides the physical environment, utilities, and facilities support services necessary to promote the educational and research activities of the university. To ensure quality service to our community, we provide strong coordination and communications between multi-functional groups and our customers, with a customer-oriented approach. Training and development of self-directed teams promotes a work environment that encourages employee initiative, engagement and development.

Duties and accountabilities include:

* Constructs, erects, installs and repairs wood and masonry structures and fixtures of wood working from blueprints, drawings, written or oral instructions.

* Proficient in installation of multiple wall hangings (Vinyl, acoustical, draperies, etc.).

* Proficient with the use of hand and power tools, such as hammer, trowels, screw guns, table, chop saws, etc., essential to perform all assigned duties.

* Remove, hang, patch sheet rock, make plaster repairs, perform trim work and make cabinetry and furniture repairs.

* Mix mortar, build, erect and repair stone, brick structures such as walls, sidewalks, curbstones and perform ceramic and quarry tile installations.

* Perform associated preparation work (i.e. form and frame work, trim setting, erect scaffolding.)

* Conducts own layout for assigned jobs which includes estimating labor hours, materials and support staff needed and maintains accurate record of labor and materials ordered.

* Perform minor roof work and repairs.

* Prepare, tape and finish unfinished sheetrock or similar materials.

* Maintain a spirit of cooperation, exercising self-discipline, diplomacy, and tact in dealing with all other university personnel.

* Perform repairs on door hardware and locking systems.

* Perform repairs on multiple different door and window systems. (IE. Hollow metal frames, Aluminum storefront, sliding, etc.)

* Work independently, without direct supervision, and coordinate work with others.

* Works under the direction of the carpenter foreperson.

* Work closely with campus customers to understand their needs, to coordinate and schedule work and close out jobs.

* Work closely with other Architectural Trades Journey persons and help team members as needed.

* Oversee outside contractors work to ensure Colgate standards are met and must be able to oversee apprentices and/or summer and casual wage hires.

* Recording work order entries, material and labor, in a timely and accurate manner.

* Demonstrates ability to provide professional communications in all interactions, including face-to-face, phone, radio or written.

* Demonstrates ability to listen to customers and transfer to actual needs and appropriately provide solutions and information for all types of users.

* Demonstrates ability to diffuse the most challenging situations and remain calm and focused and escalate as required.

* Demonstrates use of all safety regulations (federal, state and local), as well as Colgate policies, practices and procedures to carry out duties in a safe manner related to carrying out duties.

* Demonstrates an ability to work as part of a unified team, with positive relationships with all members of the department.

* Demonstrates strong coordination and communication between multi-functional teams to get the job done and done well.
