Overview of Summer Upward Bound/Upward Bound Math and Science Instructor
The Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math & Science Programs are seeking core teachers for the following subjects English (Literature/Composition), Math (Geometry to Calculus), Spanish (I to III), and Science (Biology to Anatomy). Reporting directly to the Assistant Director of the Upward Bound Program and Assistant Director of the Upward Bound Math-Science Program, the Summer Instructor is tasked to provide individualized instruction and group learning experiences to three classes of students (10th ,11th, & 12th graders) during the summer program.
Curriculum will be provided and should align with Indiana Department of Education Principles and Outcomes for each grade level, while being fun and engaging.
- Provide syllabus and lesson plans
- Teach course according to curriculum provided
- Assist students in the development of study skills necessary for successful completion of courses
- Maintain accurate and current documentation concerning student contact and progress
- Maintain contact with UB/UBMS staff
- Complete all university and program required training
- Refer students to UB/UBMS staff for information or assistance with issues such as academic advisement, juggling family, work and school, stress and time management, self-esteem and independence, study skills, career exploration, and transfer assistance
- Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferred in subject to be taught
- Experience teaching and/or tutoring in subject matter
- Demonstrated sensitivity to first generation, low-income and/or individuals who have been traditionally underrepresented
- Ability to motivate youth
- Subject to background check
On days of teaching you will report at 8:45am to sign in, lunch is unpaid from 11:45am-1:00pm, there is a planning period built into the day to allow time for grading, prep for next class, etc. with the day ending at 4pm.
The following are working days:
- June 3 and 4 (Times will be discussed with Director)
- June 10 - July 19 (Schedule provided in interview)
Compensation:
- Up to 16 hours per week (included preparation time)
- Starting at $50 per hour
