Middle School Special Education Teacher
Primary RoleThe Middle School Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction, case management, and support to students with disabilities. This role develops and monitors IEPs, delivers curriculum with accommodations and assistive technology, and collaborates with general education teachers to ensure student success. The teacher maintains accurate records, communicates with families, and provides transition services to prepare students for future learning and independence. By balancing compliance, instructional leadership, and student-centered support, the Special Education Teacher fosters academic growth, positive behavior, and well-being for all learners.
KeyAccountabilities Job Specific Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), including transition services and testing accommodations.
- Serve as Teacher of Record (TOR), ensuring compliance with state and federal special education requirements.
- Provide direct instruction aligned to curriculum standards while differentiating for student needs through accommodations and assistive technology.
- Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals, keeping grade books accurate and reflective of student knowledge.
- Support classroom management practices and implement PBIS strategies to promote positive behavior.
- Maintain accurate student attendance records and follow the student handbook consistently.
Write and oversee implementation of behavior plans.

Collaboration and Communication- Communicate regularly with families through conferences, progress updates, and ongoing correspondence.
- Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure accommodations, modifications, and assistive technology are implemented.
- Participate actively in team, data, department, and staff meetings to support collaboration and student success.
- Update and manage Google Classroom to share resources, assignments, and progress with students and families.
- Serve as a resource to colleagues by helping interpret IEPs, 504 plans, ILPs, and health plans.
- Ensure compliance with IDEA, Article 7, district policies, and DOE reporting requirements.
- Maintain test security and uphold the integrity of all state and district assessments, including required accommodations.
- Serve as a mandated reporter for suspected child abuse, neglect, or bullying.
- Demonstrate professionalism, equity, and integrity in interactions with students, families, and staff.
Engage in ongoing professional development to strengthen instructional strategies, compliance knowledge, and use of assistive technology.
