The Middle School Functional Skills Aide supports students with disabilities by assisting with life skills, academic activities, and self-regulation strategies. This role provides one-on-one and small-group monitoring, meal assistance, and supervision during arrival, dismissal, and sensory times. Working under the direction of a Special Education teacher, the Functional Skills Aide helps students build independence while maintaining safety and engagement. Through consistency, patience, and collaboration, this role plays a vital part in promoting student success in both functional and academic areas.
KeyAccountabilities Job Specific Responsibilities
- Provide daily assistance to students in developing life skills, including personal care, organization, and independence.
- Monitor individual students and small groups to support safety, engagement, and participation.
- Assist students with meals, including lunch and breakfast support.
- Implement self-regulation and sensory strategies to help students manage behavior and learning readiness.
- Support classroom instruction under the direction of a Special Education teacher.
- Supervise students during arrival and dismissal, including on/off bus transitions.
- Work closely with Special Education teachers to carry out instructional, behavioral, and life skills support plans.
- Communicate observations of student progress, needs, and concerns to supervising teachers.
- Partner with staff to ensure consistent implementation of strategies that promote student growth and self-regulation.
- Maintain positive, supportive relationships with students to encourage participation and confidence.
- Follow district, state, and federal guidelines related to Special Education supports, transportation, and student supervision.
- Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and patience in all interactions with students, families, and staff.
- Demonstrate reliability and accountability in implementing teacher directives and support plans.
Participate in training and professional development related to life skills instruction, behavior supports, and sensory strategies.

- High school diploma or the equivalent
- Experience with students with disabilities preferred
- Lifting – Occasional (30 minutes – 2.5 hours/day) – up to 50 lbs.
- Pushing/Pulling – Occasional (30 minutes – 2.5 hours/day) – up to 50 lbs.
- Sitting – Occasional (30 minutes – 2.5 hours/day)
